Seasoned American regulars land in France as Navy heads outwits German submarines. First day proves one for pleasure of new arrivals with many taking time to rest after arduous trip on the road.
The Ozark Trails Highway association begins at nine this morning at Tent City with a focus on route campaigning and time allocations for presentations to officials. The day features speeches of welcome from Amarillo leaders and state responses, followed by continued discussions on route recognition and planning.
The destroyer Shaw completed a Pacific to Atlantic coast run in about 14 days 10 hours 20 minutes, establishing a new record. It also set the fastest passage through the Panama Canal at five hours 45 minutes, beating the previous best of 6 hours 26 minutes.
The Admiralty reports 28 British vessels sunk last week by mines or submarines. In Washington, the advance guard of the American army lands on French soil to fight alongside allied forces, with Major General Sibert commanding the first detachment under General Pershing. The United States prepares to supply, equip, and sustain the troops from aboard ships and at French camps.

In Douglas Arizona on June 28 two hundred soldiers combating fires in the Chirjeahues forest reservation reported progress but the blaze still spread higher along the line.
Washington dispatch says exemption policies under the selective draft law will place questions of exemptions in the hands of local boards and are expected to be published in a few days.
Reports from El Paso say Francisco Villa leads about 1,400 men toward Jaurez from Villa Ahumada, signaling possible capture of the border town. Jaurez residents fear a northern advance as Villa shifts from Terrazas to Villa Alibada, trains halted, bridges south of Terrasas burned, telegraph lines remain.

In Douglas Arkansas state authorities seized Tigre Mining property and attempted to operate the mine and mill but could not due to power being cut off for days.
Amarillo and vicinity expect a partly cloudy day with a high near 90 and a low around 46. Winds from the west at 8 to 12 mph. Temperature record shows a maximum of 92 and a minimum of 81.
Lewis Riley of Tulsa Texas was critically injured when two racing cars collided head on one mile from the speedway. Riley had a crushed leg and arm and underwent amputation below the knee. Amos Brewer of Portales New Mexico and Ir a Smith driver escaped with minor injuries.
John and Carl Muelhausen of Cheyenne testified on the witness stand in the interstate stolen gold conspiracy trial that they carried shipments of gold ore to Cheyenne from Colorado points. Several employees of John Cusack of Cheyenne testified about alleged shipments of gold.
A special committee of coal operators representing the trade across sections approved a proposal to fix coal prices during the war. The plan calls for a joint government commission including the secretary of the interior, the defense councils coal production committee, and the federal trade commission to set the prices.
