The first meeting is set for 3 p.m. Saturday in the old post office building at Caprock Shopping Center near Canyon Expressway and Moss Lane.
A noon gun battle on a bridge near Mangum Oklahoma wounded Greer County Sheriff Max Burger Deputy Leon Atchley and Ted Wallace about 40. Wallace was hit near the eye and possibly twice while Atchley was struck in the lung and liver. The deputy and sheriff were en route from Willow to the scene when Wallace reportedly fled and a high speed chase ensued. The radio went quiet before one call for an ambulance brought responders.
Washington AP reports that Rep William H Bates R Mass appears in the Congressional Record voting no on a bill for extra staff three days after his death. Bates died Sunday and was buried Thursday in Salem Massachusetts. The tally clerk blamed the error on the Government Printing Office.
The city opens a 80 acre Southeast Park pond for youths 16 and under with boating and swimming banned. A fishing derby runs July 4 from noon to 6 pm with cash prizes from an Amarillo radio station. The 80 acre site adds to the 430 acre park tract developed since 1967, fed by storm runoff and 100000 gallons daily from the Southeast Water Treatment Plant. Bass and channel cat were stocked last year, crappie this spring. several shelters and picnic areas are provided.
Washington AP Secretary of Welfare Robert H Finch refused to quit the administration amid a cabinet dispute over whether Dr Knowles should be named health affairs chief. Knowles, head of Massachusetts General Hospital, faces opposition from the AMA and Senate GOP leader Dirksen. Finch promised a definite statement Friday as a White House clash looms over the vacant post.
