Randall County budget plans move through hearings
Randall County officials spent the week defending budget requests to County Judge Ted Wood as conference sessions continue. Wood will draft a proposed budget after three more days of talks, filing it July 24 with County Clerk Sue Bartolino, followed by public workshops August 1, 8 and 16. Departments seek minor tech upgrades and staff growth, notably the Sheriff’s Office requesting 14 new positions to staff a new jail, with costs near 450000 annually. possibilities include contracting with the federal government to house prisoners. Criminal District Attorney James Farren seeks larger legal and clerical staffs, asking for two attorneys and two secretaries, with growth contemplated beyond current staffing. Bartolino requests two full-time posts for increased document volume and moves to staff the Amarillo annex, plus tech upgrades and salt dome microfilm storage. Tax A ssessor Autry seeks laser cartridges, about 4300, as a one-time expense. Clerk Jo Carter notes her budget remains similar but includes a laptop to speed jury lists, given no computer on the second floor.
