The 173rd Airborne Brigade suffered heavy casualties with 80 Americans killed and 34 wounded, while the enemy reportedly lost large numbers. commanders say the threat to Dak To is thwarted for now but six main force battalions are still in the area. A Viet Cong sniper hit a U S Navy swift boat on the Mekong delta, injuring one and rescuing six crew. Another mortar strike damaged a divisional airfield northwest of Saigon, wounding 40.
Large crowds gathered in Glassboro New Jersey to greet President Johnson and Soviet Premier Kosygin for the second summit meeting at Hollybush. Police estimated about 25 000 residents filled the town beyond its population as flags signs and banners greeted the leaders in the midsummer heat.
John Perzinski, 56, and his son Dean, 13, farm near Dickinson North Dakota and travel from Texas to Canada cutting wheat.
