Price Daniel visits the Panhandle this week for a three day Veterans of Foreign Wars encampment in Amarillo at the Herring Hotel. He arrives Thursday for a campaign tour and speaks at Pampa courthouse at 4 p.m. and attends a Borger Hotel reception at 5 30 p.m. then a Dumas Sneed Hotel barbecue at 7 30 p.m. The Amarillo public reception plans remain undecided per Jerry Johnson campaign staff.
Tavern owners outside Amarillo told Sheriff Gaither they would answer in two weeks on a proposal to close on Sunday. More than 100 beer and liquor dealers attended a meeting in 47th District Court where officials warned of business losses. The owners later formed the State Retail Beer Dealers Association to self police and study a workable compromise.
Deputy Marshal Henry White transported Jesse Lee Freeman to Amarillo on a Dyer Act charge but brought the wrong man a Black man named Jessie Lee Freeman. The real suspect, a white man, remains in custody in Crockett Texas after transfer from Houston. White plans another trip to Amarillo with the correct man.
President Eisenhower, recovering from surgery at Gettysburg, plans to travel to Panama City for the July 21 22 American republics summit. He will leave Walter Reed Hospital around Friday and may meet Indian Prime Minister Nehru later if recovered, with a return to Thurmont options as needed. The Panama meeting commemorates 130 years since regional liberation.
