Amarillo businessman E A Bradley was elected Texas Department Commander of the Veterans Foreign Wars at the closing state convention session yesterday afternoon. His election marks a notable leadership appointment within the organization.
Amarillo news notes the identification of three local men Earl Brown Walter C Irvin and W Ss Birge as new officers along with other Texas officers. Houston chosen site for 1981 convention. Amarillo hosts delegates as officers take oath and a banquet closes the event.
Captain William C. Ocker and Lieut. C J Crane piloted a plane with an instrument for blind flying from San Antonio to Scott Field. The flight covered about 900 miles with no outside view. The pair planned to reach Washington, D C after Wright Field stop. Crane acted as safety pilot in an open cockpit while Ocker steered from a covered cockpit. The unofficial test showed the device may aid blind flying. They departed Brooks Field at 5 02 am.
A Cotton Belt Railway passenger train struck an automobile in Fort Worth on Tuesday afternoon, killing an unidentified hitch hiker and injuring four others. Injured were two DeLeon, Texas youths, Robert Hammett and J. W. Cruse, plus two Fort Worth girls, Jeanette Jones and Pat Nelson. One man was carried 200 feet on the locomotive cow catcher and a girl collapsed after walking from the wrecked car.
Chicago wheat fell under heavy selling with bears hammering prices. July futures closed at 88 1 4 cents, down from 92 1 8, marking a fourth straight day of new lows. September and December futures followed the slide with declines near three quarters to four cents.
Alfred Glenn 18 drove into a curb at Bowie and Julian Boulevards causing injuries to five passengers and himself. Passengers include Robert Glenn 12 Elizabeth Glenn 15 King Kendrick 19 La Juana Wilson 17 and Francis Ridley 17. Wilson had a broken collarbone while Alfred Glenn was cut on head and hands. All injuries non fatal. most released last night.
Washington June 24 An agreement to sustain the president's anticipated veto of the World War veterans pension bill was reached by 154 Republicans at a house Republican caucus. The move requires an immediate substitute bill and risks an override by the opposition. Representative Strong of Kansas predicted 200 Republicans would back Hoover.
Mrs Miriam A Ferguson and her husband former Governor Jim Ferguson arrive from Childress and will speak at 8 pm on the courthouse lawn. The event includes the Melody Maids and an introduction by Stuart Miller as Ferguson outlines her platform and policies amid plans to honor Senator Thomas B. Love.
The region endured extreme heat with Amarillo reaching 101 degrees by 4 pm and a low of 68 earlier. Forecaster H T Collman expected no major rain and June to stay hot but not record breaking, with a pattern of 101 possible and July bringing cooler days and harvest conditions. No rain is seen for the rest of June.
Tahoka records a blistering 103 degrees by mid afternoon as the government thermometer marks the warmest day of the year and one of the hottest in years. The heat blankets the region with clear skies and rising temperatures across the area.
The heat wave returning to Oklahoma claimed two lives. Frank Willis, 40, a truck farmer near Tulsa, died from sunstroke. George Winn, 18, drowned while fishing in the Verdigris River.
J N Beasley told the Lions club the Panhandle harvest yields the best wheat in history. He noted much of the crop grades up to 65 pounds per bushel and argued farmers blame grain dealers for low prices while prices fall due to surplus and slow movement.
Shorts have come to Marshall College campus with coeds in dark blue silk shorts and low necked sports shirts. Men’s reaction is unclear, and college officials have not issued a statement though authorities are not expected to intervene.
Mrs Ayres of Canadian sustained fractured spine after her sedan plunged 85 feet from a bridge over Horse Creek nine miles west on highway No 4. Her sister Miss Payne of Spearman and two children were unhurt while the car was demolished. Doctors could not determine injury severity that afternoon.
Leopold C. Schumacher of Palo Alto California and W S Edwards of Brooklyn New York were killed and seriously injured when their biplane crashed on a farm twelve miles north of Wichita Kansas. Both had just graduated from a Palo Alto flying school and were students at Lewis and Stanford. They were on their first cross country flight and had stopped in Clovis New Mexico for fuel.

The city commission accepted a bill of sale last night transferring the American Smelting & Refining Company's water distribution system to municipal ownership. Water will be metered at $3 installation fees and charged at the city rate, with wholesale delivery from the former private line ending in a flat-rate client base. The move aims to simplify bookkeeping and maintenance while continuing service to former customers.
Two sheepherders Ward Mortenson and Elburn Orton found wreckage eight miles south of Cedar City and a folded parachute bearing the name Maurice in rocky country. They believe it may be Maurice Graham the missing airmail pilot last January from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City. The parachute outside the plane suggests the pilot might have survived the crash. Postmaster H H Lunt notified Western Air Express in Los Angeles. Pilot Jimmie James, a friend of the missing flier, would arrive from Alhambra, California.
Morning report from Ottawa notes Kingsford Smith aiming to reach America before landing as the Southern Cross reports dark skies and fatigue 160 miles from Race. New York dispatch says the Southern Grass, westbound, is 100 miles off Cape Race Newfoundland with a radio message received tonight.
The log records an Atlantic crossing from Port Marnock Irish Free State with times from Monday night to Tuesday night. They report positions near Baldonnel 800 miles out, in fog, then near Cape Race and Grand Banks with updates to 100 miles off Cape Race. The crew notes good weather at times and that all aboard were reported OK.
Report notes the aircraft, about 100 miles from Cape Race, failing to regain its bearings as the crew described the situation with a blunt remark about the navigator’s guidance.
The navy radio station relayed an intercepted message from Captain Kingsford-Smith of the Southern Cross to Harbor Grace Newfoundland. The note said he was endeavoring to reach American territory before landing and thanked for the attempt. Timestamped 9 28 p m EST.
