Floyd County leads the Panhandle harvest with five million bushels forecast as combines run in 30 bushel fields. Hale Castro Swisher Briscoe and Deaf Smith counties report strong yields and rising outlooks amid wide variation across the South Plains.
President Roosevelt telegraphed Tom Girdler of Republic Steel and Parnell of Youngstown Sheet and Tube urging plants not to open tomorrow morning. He joined the steel mediation board in the appeal to promote safe, peaceful settlement. The message followed reports of ongoing mediation efforts in Cleveland and Youngstown as C I O leaders urged delays and warned of violence if openings occurred.
Weather outlook for Amarillo and vicinity calls for fair and warm conditions on Tuesday. West Texas west of the 100th meridian remains fair, while New Mexico expects partly cloudy skies with possible showers and thunderstorms in north central and northeast areas. Civil and assault guards take charge, bridges are destroyed and emergency routes improvised as food supplies arrive to win local support.
Eleven Texas Rangers guarded about 60 non striking workers in Fort Worth as they took possession of the Lone Star Gas warehouse and shops. Pickets watched across the street while Homer Garrison said the force stays until the strike is settled to prevent violence and service breakdown. Governor Pat M. Carmichael ordered officers kept in place as long as danger to life and property exists. A separate report notes another man charged in the flogging of J E Carpenter, a company employee beaten last week.
Grady M. Owen, 32, a cafe employee, died in a fire that gutted two rooms of an East Snyder residence early yesterday and was under investigation here today.
In Lonoke Arkansas on June 21 sheriff officials said Lester Brockelhurst an Illinois hitchhiker charged with killing an Arkansas planter tried to hang himself with a blanket in his cell. He was saved when guards heard a cry from Bernice Felton nearby. He faces trial Thursday after the state Supreme Court denied a bid for a re examination for nervous disease.
A Galveston County delegation urged the highway commission to upgrade Highway 146 to create a third connection between Houston and Galveston Island, aiming to improve regional traffic flow.
In Austin on June 21 the Texas House voted to investigate the old age assistance administration. The body endorsed a resolution seeking accurate policy information from the old age assistance commission amid rumors of a 30 000 person cut from pension rolls, a claim denied by Board of Control member John Wallace.
Justice James T. Hallinan sentenced Helen Tiernan II to 20 years to life in a state prison for slaying her 7 year old daughter in Brookhaven New York woods on May 15 to free space in her apartment for a lover. Her 5 year old son Jimmy was beaten in the same incident. The sentence likely extends to the Bedford Hills women’s prison.

U S stocks on hand July 1 are seen near 90 million bushels despite hail damage, yielding about 12 bushels per acre. In New Mexico Curry County Sam Randol farm reports 20 bushels per acre. Oldham County expected 300,000 bushels. South Plains rains boost yields. Floyd County shows strongest gains with irrigated wheat catching up to dry land. Combines report 30 to 38 bushels per acre in Martin and Zimmerman dry land, 40 to 60 in Wet Floydada irrigated. Stringer field yields 55–60 on Chief Kan beardless wheat. Antelope dry land yields 30–40, irrigated 50 on 100 acres. Farmers upgrade implements amid best year in years.
Plainview reports all jury cases continued to next term as Panhandle farmers, main jury pool, plead urgent harvest work. Judge W E Gee presides. area wheat harvest peaks late this week with 8 to 10 bushels per acre estimates and issues of weeds, binders, and threshing.
Wheat prices advanced five cents in yesterday's trading as reports point to a crop reduction in Canadian provinces led by Saskatchewan. Local price sits at 90 cents with Chicago highs near 1115 dollars. drought and rust conditions cited as factors. Private investigators in Chicago confirmed the provincial conditions. Nationwide trading centers showed a general rise was not observed.
Sam Gross a Justice informer testified in federal court that the 1933 abduction of John J. OConnell Jr was plotted in a smoke filled New York hotel room four months before it was carried out. Gross quoted defendant Manning Strewl telling Phil Ziegler you get the boy and I will get the money.
Complaints filed in federal court here accuse Butler Brothers Wholesale, Northwest Texas Motor Lines, Inc. and East Texas Motor Freight of violating the Motor Carriers Act of 1935. The charges allege the wholesale firm solicited rebates on shipments into Oklahoma and Louisiana, and the carriers granted rebates on those shipments.
