Shortage of combines threatens Panhandle harvest
J B Kidd of Plainview, area harvest coordinator, called the shortage critical as ripening wheat advances across the South Plains. Demand for custom rigs and crews outpaces supply, with North Plains requests already pouring in. Kidd said the office contacted combine-wheat centers in South Dakota, Nebraska and northern Kansas to obtain machines for northern Panhandle counties. Weather and maturing dates between Panhandle regions are narrowing the usual two to three week gap.
