Taft predicted renomination as Roosevelt loses ground

At Taft headquarters in Chicago delegates expressed relief as McKinley asserted Taft would secure the nomination. He claimed Roosevelt’s votes total 464 with Wisconsin, South Dakota and Iowa deserting the Roosevelt column on decisive votes. The motion to table the Deneen amendment passed as a Taft victory with 562 Ayes to 540. Texas recorded 28 Ayes and 0 Noes. Chairman Root ruled on Hadley’s point of order about contestants voting on identical cases. The Watson motion to refer Hadley’s expurgated roll call to credentials committee was adopted by a viva voce vote and state rolls followed.

Dozen Dead in Colorado Mine Disaster

Twelve bodies were recovered from the Hastings mine near Trinidad Colorado after an explosion blamed on a windy shot igniting gas. Victims were badly burned and scorched. Mine damage was slight and operations expected to resume next week.
