A severe Oklahoma storm is reported as the worst in state history with losses around 1,000,000 and widespread damage. Windstorms also sweep Kansas without fatalities, while neighboring states face flooding and high water disrupting communities.
AP reports a deadly tornado in Oklahoma’s southwest corner hit Blair and Headrick, killing four Black residents and injuring many others. Two Kansas tornadoes caused no fatalities, while floods threatened central and eastern Kansas and delayed rail traffic. The Missouri St. Francis levee breach left 1000 families homeless and 100000 acres inundated as more rain looms.
The second major break in the St Francis levee near Browns Ferry flooded 100000 acres of farm land and left over 1000 families homeless. Officials estimated crop and home losses between 1.5 and 2 million dollars as wheat and corn near harvest were destroyed or ruined.
A sequence of earthquakes struck central south Mexico from the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of Tehuantepec, continuing into Oaxaca state. No confirmed deaths yet but fears grow for buried victims in damaged Oaxaca homes. Oaxaca City damage is heaviest as the region recovers from a prior quake. In Mexico City Puebla Vera Cruz and other areas residents fled outdoors seeking safety.
A Texas storm tore through Blair Oklahoma and Headrick causing eight deaths and over twenty serious injuries. The destruction left every business in Blair damaged except a brick bank building and caused about one million dollars in damages. The bodies of Elmer Castle and Mrs. George Rogers were recovered among the wreckage.
A former Solon of New Hampshire and his girlfriend were killed when their plane burst into flames after a mechanical failure. Investigators traced the crash to a midair engine fire and subsequent wreckage in a rural area.
In Nashua on June 17 Marcel Theriault former state senator and Katherine Thomas 22 died when a passenger plane caught fire and crashed. Pilot George Lennox of Wichita Kansas is badly burned and in critical condition in Nashua hospital.
A planned prison escape at the state penitentiary in Huntsville was thwarted by Ranger E F Harrell. Inmates nearly completed a tunnel under the walls and were found with four civilian clothing suits and a bottle containing a drug to mislead bloodhounds.
The Texas Farm Bureau Cotton Association names 20 nominees for board seats starting July 1. Eight new directors join twelve current ones as members prepare to vote at the annual meeting in Dallas on June 25. Nominated are J. B. Rush, Byers. Pati M. Payne, Mount Pleasant. R. P. Lehman, Buckholts. M. E. Huffman, Palestine. Fritz Engleheart, Eagle Lake. W. H. Hames, Crosbyton. C. A. Barron, Lamesa. V. R. B. Carothers, Sylvester.
Senator Charles Curtis Republican vice presidential nominee spent June 17 accepting congratulatory messages from friends and neighbors at his Topeka headquarters. He announced the formal notification ceremony would be in his hometown, rejecting plans to hold it in Washington.
Autell Carlan age 19 white and Robert Jackson race Negro in critical condition at Northwest Texas Hospital after knife attacks in Amarillo near the Negro section Saturday night. Gertrude Burras was arrested for stabbing Carlan in the back. Hal Givens and two others escaped to Panhandle and were captured. Carlan, son of contractor J. H. Carlan of West Eighth street, underwent surgery to remove the blade.
Mrs Eddie Andrews of Bern Kansas and Mrs Sophie Feldman Hum boldt Nebraska sisters who were captured in Kansas in 1874 and released on the Panhandle plains visit the T D Hobart ranch south of Canadian where U S soldiers rescued them from their bands half a century ago. They plan to visit the other two sisters in California and historians from West Texas State Teachers College and the Panhandle Plains Historical Society record the event. The family was taken during the Buffalo Wallow massacre. parents and a brother were killed.
Kaw Indians praise Senator Charles Curtis of Kansas as the Republican vice presidential nominee. Elders cite his boyhood on the reservation and tribal chief Mrs. John Eads sends congratulations. Community plans await leader Emmett Thompson’s return before formal celebration.
Joaquin Pacheco and Fritz Vieler of Mexico City intend a nonstop goodwill flight from Walker Field Windsor Ontario to Mexico City. Delayed by weather they groomed and tested a Stinson monoplane at Northville. route includes Washington DC, cross Appalachian mountains, Galveston Texas then coastal flight to Mexico City.
Former United States Senator Harry A. Richardson of Delaware died at his Dover home today. He was 75.
Funeral services are set for John Goetz a cement contractor found dead Saturday night in a vacant Amarillo house relatives suspect foul play. The body was identified by clothing after being found hanging from a vent pipe with a rope by Rex Cornelius and C F Long. Coroner reports pending while officers search for exact death cause. Survived by widow and two sons W A and Lawrence.
A Boston restaurant manager barred newsboys with a 4 sign panel and soon found that many customers were former newsies who sided with the boys in a show of solidarity.
Wesley Hough of Austin is in custody on an indictment charging the murder of C. D. Moore who was fatally shot during a revival meeting on May 30. The case was filed in Austin and dated June 17.

Edwin T. Meredith longtime Des Moines publisher and former secretary of agriculture in Wilson's cabinet died at his home at 6 p.m. Heart failure due to high blood pressure was listed as the cause. He had been ill about four months, with a recent four week serious illness after returning from Johns Hopkins in Baltimore.
The Friendship monoplane carrying Amelia Earhart and crew prepared for a crossing to Ireland with plans secretive and fuel loaded. Weather over southern Ireland showed rain but good visibility as the flight proceeded from Boston toward an Atlantic crossing.
Austin June 17 state officials prepare to investigate the Gatesville boys training school over depleted bread and meat funds and a debt estimated at about 16 000 dollars ahead of September 1. The board of control questioned store keeper J B Hearn and stated the institution is in the red on back accounts and will owe around 2000 dollars more when new goods arrive. The attorney general's department will likely begin the inquiry soon.
Special to The News. Rev Cochran longtime Methodist leader in Texas and New Mexico died at his Clovis home at 5 o clock this morning from influenza. Born March 3 1859 in Knox county Ohio he entered ministry in 1886 and served as presiding elder in New Mexico for many years. He is survived by his married son Albert and his family who have lived with him.
San Antonio June 17 directors of the Gulf and West Texas railroad plan a Monday meeting in San Antonio to outline efforts to block the Santa Fe Orient merger. They warn the Orient could feeder the Santa Fe and boost tidewater freight while competition remains between San Angelo and Kansas City.
