This morning speaker Tom Collins, formerly a reporter and columnist now Kansas City bank vice president, headlines the bankers convention breakfast. He is among few to draw downtown crowds at 7 15 a.m. and shares old newsroom ties with the local press.
Tulsa judge spares Nannie Doss the electric chair and sinks her to life in McAlester State Penitentiary for the murder of her fifth husband Samuel Doss. The 50 year old widow admitted she harmed him with arsenic over a failed purchase request.
Bakersfield dated June 2 reports thousands of ore hunters move into Kerr River Canyon near Miracle Springs to stake uranium claims as 75 armed deputies patrol the 2 914 acre area. The site, California s richest uranium strike, had previous claims by Kergon and Miracle rejected for land withdrawal. First come first served opens tomorrow at 10 a.m.
In Atlanta on June 2 AP reports that legal aid to oppose the Supreme Court ban on school segregation is expanding with requests for support in Alabama. A second Southern school board pledges to close schools if required to comply.
A Virginia judge rules a one million dollar bond for school construction illegal. Alabama Atty. Gen. Patterson urges four more attorneys to fight segregation suits, while the Supreme Court lets local courts decide when to end separate white and Black schools. Patterson says extra legal aid will help oppose integration. Prince Edward County board today reads new developments.
In Honolulu Lt. Roland W. Parks, a Korean War veteran released from Red China, predicted that the Communist may free 11 more U S airmen. He noted softer treatment and home letters for the group shot down in 1953, with their fate tied to a broader propaganda pattern.
The Great Plains Agriculture conference chaired by Secretary Benson produced a 19 page summary of discussions on securing the region. Co chairmen S F Wheeler and True D Morse released the guide noting it is for guidance only. Benson held private talks with Great Plains governors on a long range drought solution and emphasized a need for a full soil survey. He announced grain sorghum price supports stay at 70 percent and left room on parity for feed grain.
High Plains bankers attend the 50th Panhandle Bankers Association convention meeting at 10 a.m. in the Crystal Ballroom Herring Hotel Amarillo with 500 attendees registered. A reception at Amarillo Country Club preceded the events, followed by a buffet dinner and a dance. Wives join a hospitality hour at XIT Room, and a stag breakfast is planned at 7:15 a.m. with women attending a breakfast and style show at the Amarillo Club.
Partly cloudy and mild to night and Friday with a low of 55 and a high of 56. Panhandle and South Plains expect similar partly cloudy conditions on Friday and Saturday with no notable temperature changes. Widely scattered thundershowers are possible in the eastern portion on Friday.
The Texas Senate backed a conference report on a near 50 million dollar yearly tax package. It would raise gasoline and cigarette taxes by 1 cent, beer by 7 mills per bottle, and business franchise capitalization by 25 cents per $1 000. Senate vote was 18 to 13. Amarillo lawmakers had mixed views but signaled support expected Friday.
A lightning strike caused a major fire at a cotton warehouse in Lubbock destroying 2398 bales of linter cotton and the building. The Palmer Manufacturing Co. of Phoenix, Ariz., owned the building and leased it to E. A. Patterson Bag Co. for Commodity Credit Corporation storage. Loss estimated at 120000 with the structure valued at 60000 and cotton at 59950. Fire units fought the blaze from 3 15 p.m. until late evening with 9 pieces of equipment and over 40 firemen, expecting full control in two days. Insurance covered the cotton and CCC loan coverage is noted.
Scattered thundershowers began yesterday afternoon over the Eastern Panhandle with possible tornado funnels touching down in the Texas Panhandle western Oklahoma and mid Kansas. No damage reported. More showers likely. Amarillo forecast partly cloudy with highs around 86. Temperatures yesterday in the 80s.
West Texas New Mexico League results show Pampa beat Clovis 12 to 4 and Abilene defeated Albuquerque 11 to 6. Amarillo and Lubbock matchup postponed by rain. El Paso and Plainview also postponed. In the National League Brooklyn routed Milwaukee 13 to 2 and St Louis defeated Pittsburgh 12 to 3. New York beat Cincinnati 6 to 4. Philadelphia over Chicago 4 to 3. American League games saw New York 12, Kansas City 6. Cleveland 9, Baltimore 3. Chicago 4, Boston 2. Detroit 4, Washington 3.

The Pan handle Market Association announces the Market Show starts Sunday at the Her ring Hotel with fabrics in new colors and weaves. Ed West says about 1,000 buyers guides have mailed to area retailers and a strong turnout is expected for the fall and holiday show. A feature will be two 21 inch television sets with drawings for buyers at 8 p.m. Sunday in Old Tascosa and 5 p.m. Monday for a registered retailer.
The Senate passed the entire 3.53 billion dollar foreign aid program requested by President Eisenhower for FY starting July 1 with a 59 to 18 vote. The measure funds direct military aid, economic programs, and a 200 million dollar Free Asia fund, with amendments mostly defeated. The bill now goes to the House.
Judge Charles O Betts set Bascom Giles for trial July 5 in 98th District Court on theft charges tied to a veterans land deal. B R Sheffield faces a separate forgery case same date. Giles to be tried first after severance of the indictments involving Kinney County land transactions under the veterans program.

In Dallas on June 22 the downtown building collapse toll remained at three dead and eight injured after a 22 hour search. Authorities halted rescue work and say no more victims lie under the debris but the block long stack of wreckage will require days to clear. No missing persons reports were issued regarding the crash of the three story building in the heart of downtown Dallas.
Mack Hollis Sneed, 72, a Texas and Oklahoma cattleman and rancher, died of a heart attack at his Amarillo home on Virginia Street. He had lived in Amarillo for about 25 years and was born in Hill County, Texas. He is survived by his wife Ivy.
