Amarillo observes Christmas with a citywide effort by the Central Christmas committee and volunteers. Food distribution feeds 250 needy families while the Salvation Army Hall offers meals and companionship. Santa Claus, gifts, and a Mendelssohn Male Chorus broadcast mark the day amid family reunions and quiet citywide observances.
In Bethlehem on Christmas Day a midnight electric star lit the Church of the Convent as an effigy of the Holy Babe was unveiled. The Latin patriarch led a procession with clergy and dignitaries to the grotto where the infant was placed at the traditional manger site. A diverse crowd from Arab Christians to Western residents of Jerusalem joined in the solemn rite and drew away from local celebrations to attend.
Christmas Eve spirit fills the CWA office at 704 Grant Street as gifts arrive for the season. The story notes the concern for injured truck collision victims at St Anthony's Hospital and remembers the Filipino boy Steve Hidalgo.

In the wake of highway crashes since Friday morning near Amarillo, two of 24 injured have died and two remain near death. Victims include Esteban Hidalgo who died Saturday afternoon and W L Boen a 26-year-old Washburn highway worker who died Sunday at Northwest Texas Hospital. Others remain in serious condition at St Anthony's Hospital.

Arch bishop Leon Elisee Tourian of the Armenian National Apostolic Church was stabbed to death inside Holy Cross Church on West 187th Street as he opened services. Two men were seized by police amid crowd panic while bodyguard Kassof Dargodian drew a revolver to shield the archbishop. The prelate directed 200000 communicants in the Americas.
Pasadena observers spar with a centuries old mystery as scientists at Mt. Wilson weigh cosmic rays and a possible supernova as the source of the Star of Bethlehem. Prof. Fritz Zwicky of Caltech suggests cosmic rays may reveal the secret while St Matthew’s account remains the only historical reference.
A Royal Palm freight train from Cincinnati derailed on a curve about 20 miles northwest of Atlanta. Fireman Joe M. Hord of Atlanta died at the scene. Conductor R F McKenzie of Rome died in hospital. Engineer J C Hill of Atlanta was hospitalized with burns. Other crew members Herman Regman of Ludlow Kentucky and C E Sanders of Atlanta were among the injured.
The Lagny France rail disaster killed 190 Christmas travelers as the Paris Strasbourg flyer struck four Nancy Express coaches in thick fog at 65 miles per hour. The engineer and fireman were jailed after officials said a closed signal was ignored.
The flagship of the second Byrd Antarctic expedition lies 50 miles north of the ice pack awaiting orders from Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd. Weather permitting, the ship is to enter the pack and head south along the 143rd Meridian. Enormous icebergs loom as a danger in the mist around Latitude 66.20 S, Longitude 144 W.
In downtown Providence two patrolmen were shot and killed near a police signal box. Patrolman Patrick H. Murphy died at the scene. Patrolman Edward H. Kelly died later at a hospital. Both were struck once in the head by a .38 caliber bullet. No witnesses emerged, though nearby shopkeepers heard sounds suggesting gunfire. Police suspect a gang involvement.
Two police officers were shot as they pursued six men in a car with Connecticut plates. A taxicab driver found the officers on the sidewalk. discr epancies noted with two bullets from Kelly's service pistol. Patrolman Murphy had reported the suspicious group near Grace Episcopal Church minutes earlier.
In the business district near the church eight men were detained for questioning after a shooting. A broken tooth was found in a rolled awning across from a police box, suggesting a wounded assailant. One man returned to a car with reported plates as police investigated the violence.
