President Willour plans to occupy a Belgian embassy suite in London. An injunction upheld by the Supreme Court against International Service, noting the suite has hosted many crowned heads.
London dispatch reports President and Mrs. Wilson will occupy the Belgian suite at Buckingham Palace during their London visit. A planned Lancaster House dinner for Saturday has been canceled to avoid crowding, leaving the Premier to host a wartime dinner with no royal guests present.
Five justices sustain federal injunctions stopping the International News Service from pirating Associated Press news. Chief Justice White joins majority upholding property rights in news and condemning bribery of newspaper staff. dissenting Brandeis warns of restricting public access to news.
Stranded soldiers in Amarillo amid a snowstorm are being entertained by the Red Cross canteen. The committee seeks volunteers to invite each soldier to a Christmas dinner and asks interested individuals to file applications stating how many they can host. Most soldiers will go home, with some traveling from overseas to demobilize.
President Wilson receives numerous petitions from American Catholics urging aid on the Irish question. Clergy and laity including several bishops request his intervention to help resolve the issue.
In Balboa Spain, two manifestant groups clashed with one calling against Spain and another for Spain. A loyalist participant was fatally shot by a pistol, as the crowd shouted political demands including pay the President.
W Becker of Slaton Texas died and W E McAlister was injured when Santa Fe passenger train 918 and freight train 933 collided in heavy snow at Lariet switch 21 miles southeast of Clovis New Mexico. Engineer Henry Prince was also hurt. Conductor Shannon aided responders. Relatives of Becker were not yet located.
General John J. Pershing, commander of the American forces, slept in a castle near Neuwied after crossing the Rhine by pontoon bridge at Coblenz. A Christmas celebration aboard the George Washington distrubed the discharges by chaplain Bloomhardt and Santa distributed papers after carols. Northern and western Missouri Kansas Oklahoma Texas and Arkansas report their first severe winter weather with heavy snow in many areas.
The attorney general announced removal of most entry and movement restrictions on German enemy aliens effective Christmas day under presidential instructions. About 500000 Germans and Austrians are affected while internment powers remain for dangerous individuals. Internment continues for a small number of suspects.
Approximately 14,000,000 members had enrolled by sixty percent of chapters when the Red Cross annual Christmas drive ended. If momentum holds, total enrollment would exceed 20 million. Central division leads with over 4,000,000 members. Atlantic is second with more than 900,000. Other divisions report Lake 1,641,806 and Southwestern 1,228,400.
The returning overseas battle fleet of nine superdreadnoughts, led by the Pennsylvania, will escort Secretary Daniels aboard the presidential Maryflower yacht to New York Harbor for the great peace review on Thursday morning.
