In a district title clash at Butler Field this afternoon Amarillo High School the Golden Sandstorm faces Breckenridge Buckaroos for Districts 1 and 2 supremacy. Pampa edged Ranger yesterday boosting Amarillo's mood as they aim to reach the state schoolboy semi finals. City is football mad.
Weather forecast notes fair conditions for Amarillo and West Texas on Saturday with little temperature change in New Mexico. Recommends fair skies across the region with daytime highs and overnight lows shown in a garbled hours table.
In Washington the wets suffered defeat in their annual fight against denaturing industrial alcohols. The county vote stood 106 to 54 against outlawing denaturants, compared with 107 to 27 last year, showing the wets gaining strength. Separately, the Senate Agriculture Committee backed $60 million for drought relief, while the House panel planned a vote on the same fund and on President Hoover’s $150 million unemployment proposal. The Davis probe examined campaign expenditures as William Z Foster refused to name the Communist Party central committee.
In Clovis New Mexico on December 15 burglars broke into May Brothers jewelry store and stole about 3000 dollars worth of diamonds and watches. Twenty four diamonds valued 37.50 to 450 each and around twenty watches were taken from a window display. Other watches and rings left in locked cases were not touched.
The Denver murder trial of Mrs. Pearl O Loughlin opened with the judge barring any admissions she made during five days of police grilling. The district attorney attacked her alibi as she testified about the strain of prolonged questioning. Leona O Loughlin, found in Berkeley Park Lake October 17, is the alleged victim. The defense signaled a possible acquittal request after the state rested.
El Paso police sought P. R. Payne missing after he left Pecos for his cafe and was not seen again. He is brother of A. D. Payne, Amarillo attorney who died in an Amarillo jail bombing linked to his murder case surrounding his wife’s death. Authorities say he may be mentally dazed by the tragedy.
A mysterious poison fog blankets the Meuse valley in Belgium for three days causing 64 deaths and many animal victims. Villagers fear German war gas or toxic by products. Engis is hardest hit with fourteen dead as authorities investigate buried wartime gas stores and industrial byproducts.
Special radiogram from Amarillo announces Santa’s live reindeer and sleigh in the December 11 parade. The message describes the reindeer as tiny, not tall, and invites all readers to witness the spectacle and tell their children about seeing Santa’s actual living reindeer. The transmission notes travel from Nome across the Bering Sea toward the Pacific.
The district court convicted Jack Cullum of criminal assault on a 12 year old girl and sentenced him to five years in the penitentiary. The trial followed Paul Haisting’s similar conviction the night before, Willis Roberts being acquitted. The case spanned one day of jury selection and evidence, with the offense described as occurring in an automobile north of the city. Cullum denied the charges on the stand. Two more men face trial.
Witnesses told the House communist investigating committee that a resolution would end capitalist domination. William Z. Foster said communists favored confiscation of necessities and called religion an opiate. He added that advanced workers view the Soviet Union as their country with only the red flag.
Maury Hopkins, newly named district manager, announced that Northwest Texas division headquarters for the West Texas Chamber of Commerce will be established in Plainview for at least the coming year. Hopkins resigned from the Plainview Chamber to take the district manager post, but the exact office location had not been fixed until today.
Hutchinson county's suit against W. L. Pearson Construction Co concerning county construction work was moved to Carson County today by the 84th district court. The case will be called January 3 at Panhandle, court attaches announced.
Eight engineers who confessed to plotting to overthrow the Soviet government by foreign intervention plead for their lives before four supreme court judges. Professor Leonid Ramsin, named as leader, addressed the court in a measured tone admitting errors and insisting they were not demons, insisting money was not the motive and saying he disclosed all facts to reveal initiators and supporters of the plan.
The Goodnight Gin in Decatur burned at about 6 30 tonight for a total loss. The plant was finishing the last bale of the season and closing soon. No one was in the press area or near the emergency barrel of water to fight the fire. The gin belonged to the West Texas Gin Company of Quanah, a subsidiary of Quanah Cotton Oil. H S Gilbert was the gin manager. Insurance covered the plant, amount unknown.
At about 6 am a group of five or six masked men robbed the Cox and Thompson implement dealers safe in Plainview. Dave M Thomson was slugged and forced to reveal the combination after being attacked near the car. The robbers fled with several thousand dollars in twenty dollar gold pieces. No arrests yet, police alerted, report continued on page 18.
Amarillo forwards carry the burden to slow Breckenridge and aid the backs in scoring while shutting down Magness and Company in this afternoon matchup.
