Farm Vote May Slump Cotton
Administration farm officials warned that if cotton farmers reject the AAA marketing control in Saturday’s referendum, the government’s $475,000,000 investment in cotton would be impaired. A two thirds majority is needed to set quotas, otherwise production could exceed demand and prices fall further. The AAA would still fix acreage allotments and subsidies, with an estimated 45 cents a pound benefit on normal production. Government loans secured by 10,100,000 bales remain collateral, with depreciation pegged at about $50,000,000 in value.
