First Collingsworth Bale Brings 20 Cents
Wellington merchants who belong to the Chamber of Commerce paid 20 cents per pound for the first bale of cotton ginned in Collingsworth County from the 1930 crop. The cotton was grown by Bob Downs eight miles east of Wellington and was ginned here late Wednesday. The fund for purchasing the cotton was subscribed Thursday by merchants, who placed the bale on exhibition in the public square.

Packing Plant Announced to Open in Amarillo by Sept. 10
A modern packing plant for Panhandle and southwestern livestock will be in operation in Amarillo by September 10. Raymond R. Pinkney and partners have bought the Western Packing Co. property and remodel it with a $250,000 charter planned. The plant will start with about 25 workers and expand, killing cattle and veal first, then hogs two weeks later. They aim for quality and local training, with initial staff from Pueblo and Denver and later local hires. The plant’s current capacity is 800 cattle and 2,000 hogs monthly, to be enlarged after final changes. Cudahy Hog concentration operations will continue alongside.
