Lawmakers alter course after street protests and political pressure as they reverse a recent action. Opposition voices demand accountability while officials defend new stance amid mounting public scrutiny.
The Senate finance committee rejected higher taxes for small incomes and approved a rewritten wealth tax bill aligned with President Roosevelt’s distribution program. It limits heavier levies to those over 1 million dollars, replacing earlier measures targeting incomes as low as 800 dollars annually. Speaker Burns and others predicted House rejection. Senator Barkley led the reconsideration after an 8 to 8 tie. Harrison introduces a substitute.
Eddie Orr, a Dallas taxicab driver, was charged by complaint with the slaying of 38 year old Floyd J. Troupe at his place of business last night. Orr allegedly refused to speak but claimed in quote that “He won't beat anybody else out of $10.” Troupe was killed by a man hiding a gun in a paper bag.
KGNC moves studios to the former KGRS site on the Dallas highway near the Tri State Fair Grounds. A 254 foot tower will serve as the station antenna and the Globe News outlet expands in a refined broadcast layout.
Broadcasting facilities expand as a second studio is fitted for speech and solo musical programs. Sales and business offices move from the Amarillo Hotel to the Paramount Building occupying suites on Polk Street Ninth Avenue corner, with an elaborate audition room and downtown solo studio included.
Three radio engineers work daily to rebuild the transmitter and add new speech input gear and a modern studio control system. The major upgrade is a 234 foot Blaw-Knox vertical radiator, planned to become the tallest structure in Panhandle KGNC area and delivered in 10 days to two weeks.

The mayor emphasized the incident was not city sponsored and was meant in jocularity. Washington officials said a formal protest would depend on a embassy report.
Crown Prince Michael aged 13 secretly smoked his first cigarette while traveling with King Carol through Bessarabia. He lit the cigarette from his father’s case as the royal coach halted in Chisinau, but a king’s detective appeared, causing him to toss the cigarette out the window.

A secret court of inquiry in Post unveils a fatal Friday night ambush near a farm six miles northeast. J W Huff, 48, body found in a lake, no drowning signs. His son Jack Huff, 20, alleged his father shot him then attacked him before fleeing as authorities investigated. The report mentions a 16 gauge shotgun used in the alleged attack. The Associated Press reports blistering heat swept the Pacific Coast from the Canadian border to Mexico while prairie regions enjoyed cooling breezes. Seven drownings and a death by heat prostration were recorded in the far West as Brawley in Imperial Valley reached extreme temperatures.
L. J. Naar was sentenced to a year in jail and fined 1000 dollars after allegedly saying he hoped a man whose car collided with his would die Edward Kline Jr 26 remained in the wreckage witness said Naar faces an additional charge of manslaughter in state court and the verdict marked the heaviest punishment by Judge Thomas V Holland in municipal court.
In Des Moines Iowa August 12 a scare of infantile paralysis quarantine hovered over 3000 guardsmen at the state militia summer encampment. Doctors considered asking Health Commissioner Walter Bierring to order the quarantine after diagnosing a guardsman as ill with infantile paralysis. The patient Daniel Cokt 24 Cedar Rapids was admitted to Town Methodist Hospital and doctors said his condition was not yet deemed critical.
Tom Larry 24 a Harrison County convict was shot to death on the Retrieve Prison Farm six miles from Angleton Texas during an attempted break by three convicts from a wood squad. Larry led the breakout and was killed by a guard who thwarted the escape.
Washington August 12 Chairman Jonce of the House agriculture committee criticized the new Farmers Independent Council of America. He called its slogan that the farmer should be left alone a fallacy and said farmers have not been left alone due to trade barriers monopolies and tariffs.
The American Federation of Labor executive council urged that all Works Progress Administration building and construction projects be moved to the Public Works Administration. The move aims to prevent nationwide work relief strikes as unions warn of further action in major cities. A 93.50 security wage sparked a prolonged WPA labor protest with New York and Philadelphia already affected.

J Frank Chastain aged 47 a U S citrus fruit inspector from Harlingen Texas died in Mangum Oklahoma from meningitis linked to injuries after a horse kicked him Saturday. He passed away today with the tragedy reported by United Press.

The Texas Highway Commission meets Tuesday in Dallas to decide control of funds for farm to market roads. Texas has about 3 million dollars allocated this year in a direct test against the Works Progress Administration which has about 25 million. The meeting will include county officials and local groups to decide whether to use existing agencies or create new duplicating ones.
President Eamon de Valera drafts a new constitution that could force Britain to choose between an Irish republic within the commonwealth or full independence. The plan calls for presentation to a joint Dail and Senate session in autumn, replacing the 1922 Free State charter. A general election may follow to settle Ireland's independence question.

Washington August 12 Congress military lobby investigators moved to compel Howard Hopson the elusive mastermind behind Associated Gas and Electric to testify tomorrow morning before the House inquiry. Senate probes under Senator Black will also press for testimony though Hopson’s exact whereabouts remain undisclosed.
J. J. Rose a 40 year old rancher from Pleasant Valley southeast of Portales was shot and killed on the veranda of the Roosevelt County courthouse. Silas McCabe a 50 year old neighboring rancher was held in custody in connection with the slaying. Deputy Sheriff Poindexter said family trouble was blamed. Rose died almost instantly and an inquest was called by the district attorney's office.
Reports from Aklaviki say Wiley Post and Will Rogers arrived at the northern station yesterday and are not making immediate plans to continue their flight.
