President Roosevelt approves construction of a modern battle fleet in both government and private yards. The push aims to strengthen naval power and national defense amid growing international tensions.
President Roosevelt authorized a Navy plan for 21 new warships, a 238.9 million building program to run over three years. Admiral Standley and Rear Admiral Land conveyed the plans to the White House and will announce yard allotments after his approval. The move aims to boost the fleet under London naval limits.
W L Led better of Chillicothe was elected president of the Panhandle Firemen's Association and Chillicothe was named the next meeting place. J I Blackstone of Burkburnett J F Foily of Plainview and Quincy Wilson of Vernon were chosen as officers including secretary treasurer.
Governor Rolf signed two bills in Sacramento to deter kidnapping. One bill imposes capital punishment for the crime and another allocates 10,000 dollars in rewards for kidnapping cases.
The Passion Play at the Municipal Auditorium is not presented tonight after last night's show. Miss Lois Black will refund admission money at the News Globe office. About 500 attended last night as the European Passion Players move on to Lubbock.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports wholesale prices for the week ending July 29 fell about three fourths of one percent from the prior week. The decline is led by farm products with the index dropping from 62.7 to 59.6, about five percent, while foods eased from 66.5 to 66.1.

Coffeyville Kansas August 2 Officers tonight gave up the search near Weir City for a gang of robbers who terrorized the town for over four hours stole the Weir City State Bank safe and captured 16 citizens. Two robbers abandoned their truck under fire while pursued. The fugitives were later seen on Etchens Groundview stock farm but were not found. The bank safe truck with $3000 was moved toward Weir City under heavy guard. The stolen truck came from Tulsa July 6.
Chicago August 2 grain markets opened with wheat rising 4 3-4 cents to 5, corn up 3 3-8 to 3 7-8 cents and oats up 2 1-8 to 3 cents as prices jumped the limit for the second day.

Magnolia Petroleum lowers East Texas crude by 25 cents to a 50 cent base and lists regional reductions including North Central Texas and Oklahoma areas with tops ranging to 62 cents for high gravities.
