Grain Sorghum Outlook Brightens For Next Planting
Hybrid grain sorghums are here and seed in limited quantities will be available for planting next year. Experts expect yields to rise 20 to 40 percent from hybrids and note grain sorghums can outperform corn in dry years, potentially expanding the belt eastward from the Great Plains.
Grain sorghum research aids far reaching hybrids
The Agricultural Research Service reports joint work with Texas personnel and Kansas Oklahoma researchers yielding new grain sorghum hybrids. The crop, popular as feed after small grains, covers about 13.3 million acres with an estimated 266 million bushels in 1955. Major growing states include Texas Oklahoma Kansas Nebraska and Colorado with California New Mexico and South Dakota also growing the crop.
