Enrollment at Alpine Public Schools and Sul Ross State College reaches historic highs reflecting growth in Alpine and the surrounding Big Bend area. News covers gas discoveries near Alpine Marfa progress on River Road completion, local football notes, region events, and regional figures in education and industry.
The Board of Regents approved two building programs at Sul Ross State College totaling about 575000 dollars. A five room wing to Ferguson Hall will house 100 dormitory beds costing 200000 to 225000 dollars, and the dining hall will be expanded at roughly 150000 dollars. Architect B R Cantrell is to begin plans now, with completion of the dining hall by fall 1961 and possibly the dormitory as well. Funding comes from a Housing and Home Finance Agency loan following a 1960 college housing bill signed by President Eisenhower.
Alpine Bucks travel by bus to Sonora Friday facing an undefeated Broncos led by a 140 to 170 pound lineup. The Bucks, coming off two close losses, plan a spirited offense while missing defensive back Mike Nelon who broke his collarbone last week. Thirty players ride to Sonora for the Friday night game and stay overnight as coaches Bromiey and Martin prep a bold attack.
Mr and Mrs W C Loven purchased the Texas Cafe on Holland Avenue from Mr and Mrs J Y Walker who operated it for two years. The Lovens plan to keep current staff including Ruben Losoya Luis Valadez Manuel Robledo Pat Torres and others in place. A formal open house will be held at a later date with the Walkers remaining in Alpine.
S. D. Vick's U. K. Tire Co. resumes tire recapping in a near complete cinder block shop. The old building burned Aug. 3 and J. E. Gray Jr. built the 40 by 50 foot structure. Damaged equipment was repaired and new gear added, with Standard Oil Chevron products also sold.
Mrs Kate E Mosley a pioneer Brewster County resident died Sunday in Fresno California at her daughter Katie E Freunds home She had lived with her daughter for two years and was a Big Bend resident since 1906 She is survived by another daughter Maude Milam of Alpine.
Off campus enrollment reaches 217 with 1001 on campus, 4th highest gain among 18 state colleges. Records show 1001 on campus today, with extension centers adding 217. Registrar Dr Decker notes growth trends since 1952 and plans for new dormitories to handle a projected 10 percent fall rise in 1961.
Sul Ross State College football heads to San Marcos for the Lone Star Conference opener against Southwest Texas State College after a 2-0 start. Highlights include Wild Bill Phillips scoring twice and Jack Geron adding a 68 yard play from Jesse Hatfield.
Mrs. J C Casparis was thrown from her car in a collision with a vehicle driven by Harold Cowell 16 at North 5th Street and Anson Avenue yesterday afternoon. She was taken to Brewster County Memorial Hospital for bruises and scratches. Cowell was uninjured. Police Chief Jack Johnson led the investigation.
Brewster County Grand Jury presents Alpine City Council with ten recommendations on water rates budgets stenography and governance. It urges strict purchase orders personal use limits city attorney regular consultation and annual financial reporting with signatory checks by an additional council member.
Willie Uranga previously charged with assault with intent to murder in the Cecil Buckner knife incident was no-billed by the grand jury last Thursday.
The Game & Fish Commission reports permits still available for antelope hunts in West Texas Trans-Pecos and Panhandle ranches. About 1689 buck and doe permits issued after census checks. prices range from 26 to 60 dollars. Short seasons set in Panhandle districts and counties north and south of the Canadian River with dates in October.
Crawford of Pine High School announced that Carol Vogt and Tony Warnock are semifinalists in the 1960-61 National Merit Scholarship competition. About 10,000 top scorers from 15,000 high schools nationwide qualify to this stage, with the semifinalists chosen per state and territory.
Coca Cola to buy Alpine tract water from a test well near Antelope Lodge west of Alpine with strong utilities. Big Bend Betting Co. expected to purchase land from Eric Williams this week for a bottling plant near the water well. Water sent to Atlanta for chemical analysis after samples broken en route. County service areas include Presidio Brewster Jeff Davis Pecos and Terrell.
