Liord P Bloodworth Alpine chamber manager returned last Saturday from a San Antonio Austin Houston and South Texas tour meeting chambers of commerce. He and J C Epperson said the trip advanced promoting Alpine and Big Bend National Park. Bloodworth plans to visit Lubbock Amarillo next to share park information with northern towns. The Alpine Rotary Club earned the Charles Andrews Trophy for District 115 again with a 31 point margin and a 99.49 percent attendance last year.
Jack Garrett-led venture opens a drive-in cafe named Chicken Hut at Highway 90 1 West Alpine. Menu features chicken in the basket sandwiches of all kinds and cold drinks.
The Garden Club sponsors the annual dahlia show to be held at City Hall next Wednesday. Flower growers with dahlias are urged to bring them to City Hall as early Wednesday morning. The event, gaining national attention, aims to boost publicity and grow like the Rose Festival and Dogwood Trail, with Texas highland dahlias noted as the finest.
Texas hunters won 421 open season antelope permits for Oct 1 to 9 with 672 applicants. 136 former participants were dropped. 115 alternates may fill openings. Antelope core hunting lands lie in Hudspeth Culberson Brewster Reeves Pecos and Jet Davis Presidio counties. Perks include $25 per day leases and guidance on carcass chilling travel, gear, and rifle sight checks.
Following a brief cold spell with lows around 39 to 40, warm conditions returned to the Highland area. Temperatures reached about 91, with several days of cloudy skies and little moisture. The prolonged dry spell continues to impact ranch ranges.
Superintendent Hugh Waldrum announced that fifty-five additional students enrolled since the opening day of the term. The count includes enrollments up to Tuesday of this week, with thirty-four at Centennial school, sixteen in Central ward, and five in high school, bringing total enrollment to 787 and still growing.
Soldiers and relatives travel and return from wars and postings. Thad Corkins of Ellington Field visited relatives here after being sent back to the States from a bomber crew in the European theater. Lt Plemmons and Littleson visited en route to discharge in Fort Worth. Rex Uranga received a 42 month army discharge after service in the Southwest Pacific. Torre Fierro Jr. completed Camp Hood training before reporting to Fort Ord. Lawrence Wood of Jacksboro, missing since Java, now released. Park highway survey planned along Persimmon Gap toward Big Bend National Park entrance. Engineer Mr Kempen will have an office at the state highway location north of here to supervise the 40 mile route segment with signs and alignment work.
Wally Davis was announced as chairman of the National War Fund campaign in Brewster County. The campaign starts Oct 8 and aims to complete quickly. He cites postwar needs, U S overseas servicemen, and increased road shows for troops with committee members Frank McCollem Lloyd Bloodworth John Clanton and D M Bennett awaiting further details.
Property owners are reminded that Sept 30 is the final date for paying city taxes without penalty being added. Ten percent penalty will be added on all taxes not paid before the deadline, plus one half of one per cent interest, City Secretary Skevington reminds taxpayers. It is hoped those who have not paid will call at the city office next week and not wait until the last minute.
Secretary of State Claude Isbell grants a 20 year charter to the Big Bend Trail Association of San Angelo to work with Mexican and Chihuahua officials on extending US Highway 67 beyond Chihuahua and to promote the scenic and historic aspects of the highway. Incorporators include Meadows, Minó Shutt, Lambert Lain, Frank McCollum, Douglas Motley, Don Purington, Lindsay Phillips, Gordon Kenley, and others.
Jack Yarbro of Marathon, a retired first class ensign and survivor of the USS Houston disaster, is back in the United States after being held by the Japs since February 28, 1942. He describes brutal conditions in Java Burma and Siam camps, living in bamboo shacks with scarce food and medicine, and recalls long swims to safety and a lone officer's death. Survivors built a railroad under harsh captivity, aided by Allied doctors, while morale stayed high through a tin-can radio.
Sul Ross State College announces its largest enrollment since wartime disruption with students from Texas and three other states. Veterans return and rapid remobilization, plus government education allowances, are cited as drivers. New president Hawkins confirms intercollegiate athletics resume with spring football. New faculty members Carrico Whittaker Littrell join, with others expected by spring or summer session.
Brewster County keeps its 1945 tax rate at the same level as last year. The state rate rose from 7¢ to 7c, adding about 15¢ per $100 valuation for county taxpayers. School district rates are Alpine 1, Marathon 1, Terlingua 100. Taxes due Oct 1 and delinquent after Jan 31. Lt. Lawrence C. Lacy, visiting his wife Mary Ann Kokernot, serves on USS Alaska, a new battle cruiser involved in the Tokyo raid and Pacific actions, amid a midflight aircraft mishap near a carrier strike on the Ryukyus.
