Work has begun on a modern tourist court east of the Van Fossan grocery on East Main Avenue. Mrs. Ella R. McBride owns the project, with 15 single-unit cottages and operator living quarters. Some cottages will feature light housekeeping and two beds, all with modern plumbing and tub or shower baths. Construction uses stuccoed tile, with J. A. Massey Tyer as general contractor. Alpine Plumbing Co. will handle plumbing and Wright Butane the gas mixtures. wiring contract not yet let. Completion expected in 90 days.
The Huntsville-Walker County Chamber of Commerce passes a resolution thanking Dr. R. M. Hawkins for his service as superintendent and director and congratulates him on becoming Sul Ross State Teachers College president. Captain Tom H. Stovell receives the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism in the Dutch East Indies theater in 1944, including actions over New Guinea and Namlea.
Capt Milton D. Hawes of Fort Davis, prisoner since Corregidor’s fall, is on his way home. He told his wife in Houston he would share details on arrival. Hawes and Mrs. Hawes have two sons, Joe Milton and Eddie, the latter born since his departure.
Sul Ross State College prepares for its twenty sixth session with Freshman Day on Monday and registration Tuesday. New faculty include John L. Carrico plus Miss Anne Whittaker Miss Alma Littrell and Mrs Virginia Link as music and social science instructors. Plans add courses in social sciences and English while Hancock Hall returns as a dormitory. Campus housing expands with cadet wives and co op apartments as enrollment looks up for the coming year.
Latin Americans in Alpine will celebrate Mexico's independence day on Sept 16. Jehan Walker the local Mexican consul announced a program at the college auditorium tomorrow night at 8:30 and Sunday at 4:30 with Mexican dances and music. Consul Walker will speak and youths will sing in both languages with invited authorities and dignitaries attending.
An early-season norther blew into the Alpine area Wednesday bringing likely the worst dust storm in years. Temperatures dropped with Sul Ross College reporting 39 at 7 am, while the week’s high reached 94 last Thursday. Dry conditions persist with local showers. rain is badly needed over the Big Bend and Davis Mountains region.
A man died after falling from a moving train, with injuries reported at the scene. The body was shipped to a burial site for further examination and funeral arrangements are pending as authorities investigate the incident.
Gilchrist visited the Ale vine area on Wednesday and Thursday on official business for Texe A. & ML, meeting with local leaders and agencies. The visit highlighted interdepartmental cooperation and regional engagement.
Carlos M. Boudreaux died at his Alpine home last Tuesday. Funeral services conducted by Rev. Fred S. Rogers were held Friday at 3 p.m. at the East Main avenue home. Interment followed at Marathon Cemetery with Mason lodge pallbearers from Anchor Lodge No. 424 San Antonio and local Masons in attendance. Mr. Boudreaux lived in Brewster County since 1910 after moving from Marathon in 1921.
Sale of the De Luxe Cleaners shop to Cecil Hale was announced this week. The business has been operated by Mrs. Mattie M. Weill for the past eight years. Hale, who has worked at the air field since its establishment, will lead the shop.
