Sul Ross State College expects about 900 enrollment for 1956 57 with 714 students registered by noon and ongoing registration next week. Officials cite a trend of upperclassmen returning and a well balanced distribution across seniors juniors sophomores and freshmen enabling broad course offerings. In 1955 56 the college awarded 251 degrees during spring and summer sessions.
Alpine Bucks face Uvalde Coyotes at Alpine High Field in a season opener. The 1956 model team trains 15 days, with one casualty Pete Valenzuela a broken collar bone out six weeks. Starting lineup lists Olazada through Espinoza and Turner, averaging 157 pounds. Veterans from last year sit out, but Kelley and Bromley promise scrappy play against the Coyotes’ single wing offense.
The Avalanche announces installation of a Heidelberg printing press by Art Neitzel of Denver. The machine prints two jobs at once and washes itself automatically, prompting praise from publishers across the Southwest. Witnesses include Chalmers Broadfoot, Don Littleton, Carl Lawson, Henry Bailey, Tom Lankford, and C. W. Bishop as a 3000 pound package is unloaded. Meanwhile local politics see a dignified race between J. T. Rutherford and Charles Gibson with each candidate praising the other.
Delegates from Alpine will present reports on Boys' State by Don Burgess Lazaro Valenaula and on Girls' State by Lolly Lockhart at a Monday night Ameri can Legion Auxiliary meeting in the Legion Home. The programs note summer events in Austin with hostesses Mrs. Berta Lassiter and Mrs. Peyton Cain and chairmen Tom Coats and Elvie Williams. Alpine High School juniors and parents are invited with refreshments planned.
Four relatives of Mrs. Ray La Beff died in a head-on collision 22 miles east of Sabinal on a farm to market road. One of the two young men in the other car died. the survivor is in critical condition. Funeral services were held at Utopia for Mrs. La Beff's aunts Mrs. Mabel Berry and Mrs. Georgia Pilcher and the pilot's grandmother, with Pilcher's extensive descendants noted. Mrs. La Beff and her husband attended, bringing back her father B. G. Laxton for a visit before returning to Oregon.
At a Thursday noon Alpine Rotary Club meeting in the Holland Hotel Sul Ross head coach Alfilch praised Lobos for an outstanding team and Alpine High School coach Curtis Kelley commended his squad.
Enrollment figures for the Alpine public schools show a drop from 1009 to 969 on the corresponding date, September 10, with Alpine Central down 26 from 347 to 321, Alpine Centennial off 18 from 450 to 435, while Alpine High School increases by six to 213. Teaching loads for September were set at the Sept 11 board meeting, detailing class rosters across Alpine Central and Alpine Centennial schools.

Avalanche owner James W. Glasscock announced the completion yesterday of an original Heidelberg job press described as the world's fastest platen printing press. The new press, installed with Art Neitzel of Denver guiding setup, expands the Avalanche's job printing department and aims to deliver high quality at low cost. Mayo Cleveland leads the mechanical team, and visitors are invited to see the Heidelberg in operation.

Congress announces U S Rep J T Rutherford addressed the Alpine Lions Club and spoke on his work and seeking constituent advice.
About 16 to 18 operators will be needed as Alpine toll center adopts the TEnnyson exchange on Sept 16. The $290000 plant expansion adds 6000 square feet and allows direct long distance dialing to 4000 cities once implemented.
W W Wilson El Paso Chamber executive urges travel to Big Bend National Park in reply to Avalanche editorial. He recounts arranging tours for staff, visiting Alpine and park sites, promoting conventions and tours to boost Texas park visitation and awareness.
The Alpine Red Cross Chapter will meet on the first Tuesday of each month, says chairman Mrs. G. B. Ogle. James Hamilton of Sweetwater spoke on local chapter duties and disaster role, stressing March fund campaigns and community preparedness. Committee roles were announced with Mrs. Ogle as chair, Paul Forchheimer as vice chair, Guy Crawford as treasurer, and other officers and board members listed.
