After a taxing production week, the Avalanche announces closing to rest and recover. Editors and printers recount long hours, page assembly, and presses as the magazine nears completion. Frustrations mount over errors and missing cuts, with readers warned of imperfections.
The disappearance of Dr Robert H North, an osteopath from Mona, remains partly solved after discovery of his automobile in Glenn Springs arroyo about three miles north of Glen Springs. Park officials note the car shows signs of attempted extrication and that the last known sighting was June 6, 1947.
The Alpine Cowboys baseball club under H L Kokernot Jr. has built a 184 game six year span from 1946 to this season, with 145 wins and 39 losses. They allowed 633 runs to opponents 815, and lost only four of 27 games in 1949 plus five in the just completed season, with Kokernot praising fan support and away game messages.
Fort Davis September meeting of the Mile High club was held with Supt. George R. Moore presiding. The group reviewed school programs and new rooms at W. L. Young. Coach Young touted a strong six man football team and band director Hendren shared band prospects. Trustees member Chapin represented the board. Insurance adjus ter Brooks of Odessa attended as guest. Members noted the two year street lighting contract with West Texas Utilities Co. expiring in October and planned renewal. Mr and Mrs W J Newell spent several days in El Paso.

Weekly and monthly meetings span churches chambers of commerce legion and service organizations including Lions Rotary and Scouts at various venues such as Holland hotel and hospitalit y room.
Bob Barrow a 16 year old Los Angeles native formerly from Alpine and grandson of Mrs A B Sandifer of Alpine stars as a caddy in Follow the Sun at Granada Theatre showing tonight. He has also appeared in Cheaper by the Dozen and will appear in Two Tickets to Broadway with a speaking role.
Dan Graham of the Alpine VA Department reports first fall weigh in on Alpine High School FFA calves. Five Brewster County ranches provided calves for six boys. Gains ranged from 213 to 278 pounds, with several steers advancing to 600 plus pounds by September 1. The program resumes after July August heat pauses.
Alpine high school travels to Sanderson for a 8 p.m. season opener against the Sanderson Bailes. The Bucks, coached by Richard Usuilsom Son and Guy Woodruff, expect a tough matchup with Eagles, who in 1950 handed Alpine a 13-7 defeat. Band and pep plans noted, with a 50-piece band and 75 pep squad members to perform before kickoff. Starting lineup hints included, with strong names such as Davis, Hernandez, Williams, DeVendort, Kent, ODonnell, Cowell, Allen, Smith, Richardson, Robledo, and Cowboy Robinson. The usual Eagles rivalry context cited.
The avalanche office will close Saturday with no promise of new work, but deliveries scheduled for Saturday will be fulfilled.
Newsom to head the fat steers section at the 1982 San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo, with J A Marsh of Georgetown as area supervisor of vocational agriculture. The exposition, held at the county coliseum Feb 19 26, 1982, aims to boost entries after the 1951 grand champion paid 21000, and planners expect stronger participation.
Gulf Oil signs a 10 year commercial lease on a 271 000 acre ranch south of Alpine in South Brewster Presidio counties. Burkes Bros Steamship Co owner of the ranch will receive a set per acre annual rental in the tract. The 69 ranch ties in with the Extreme northern boundary about 49 air miles south of Alpine. The ranch was once owned by the late W W Tumey of Bethe.
Jackson field home of the Sal Ross Lobos hosts a new electric score board funded by local businessmen and fans. Inscription soliciting pledges to cover the balance of about 1200 dollars continues. Contributors may pledge through FL McCollum D M Tennett or Tom Stovell at First National Bank.
The heaviest rains of the year fell across parts of the Bi Bend-Davis mountains starting last Friday with daily showers extending west of Alpine. Measurements show totals around 1.79 inches in Ryan area and significant rainfall up to Marathon and north through the Davis mountains, with additional totals reported across Kokernot, Vernon McIntyre, and nearby ranches. A Friday windstorm damaged the new drive in theatre under construction east of Alpine.
Pamino Valenzuela of Alpine is jailed in Brewster County after being charged with stealing two sheep from the Gene Benson Ranch last month. A $1500 bond was set by Justice R. C. Garnett. Valenzuela, employed on a fencing crew nearby, reportedly admitted the theft.
City tax deadline set for October 1 with penalties after September 30. Catharine Hill, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hill, to pay in Houston and enroll at Rice Institute. Miss Hill graduated with Alpine High School class of 1951 and holds the Roper Distinguished Student scholarship. M. F. Payne returns home after five months in Kansas City and Texas.
J L Kerby Sul Ross college business manager left Weatherford last week to hunt in Canada. He joined his father and another man for a big game expedition in British Columbia.
Sul Ross College announces evening courses for public in several fields such as business and English. Interested persons should call the Office of Public Service at 257-1, leave name, address and telephone, and indicate preferred courses. A visit to the office is welcome.
Funeral services were held at Our Lady of Peace church for Fred M. Gaston 78 who died after a cerebral hemorrhage in Marfa. Born February 14 1876 in Des Moines Iowa he worked as a newspaper publisher in Oregon and an editorial writer in Washington before moving to Alpine. He was married to Kathryn Rock in 1940 and involved in mining and real estate. Survived by widow a daughter Mrs Norris of Denver and sister Mrs Wachtler of Pittsburgh. Interment was at Elm Grove Cemetery.
A plan announced this week outlines a caretaker dwelling with two bedrooms a screened porch and garage of cinder block construction plus a bunkhouse offices repair shop and modern conveniences. An 18000 gallon water tower power plant two generators 1800 watts and a barn storage building with five rooms stalls are included. The Texas Game and Fish commission operates the 54000 acre preserve with local biologist F Etheredge.
Salia Rodriguez age 16 died Wednesday after being struck by an automobile on West Holland Avenue between Curly Davis Station and Stambaugh Auto Co. Ramond Lasoya drove the car. witnesses said three girls crossing the street caused the incident as Rodriguez failed to hear the horn. Driver tried to swerve but she stepped forward and was hit. No charges filed. Rodriguez was daughter of Mr and Mrs Charlie Rodriguez. Funeral services were conducted yesterday afternoon at o'clock from the Catholic church.
The 16 car Lew Drive-In at the town’s east edge will open for business October 25 after extended work. Granada Theatre manager C. W. Davis said Breckenridge contractor J. M. Montgomery will return next Monday to rebuild the screen and finish other tasks needed for the opening. Mr and Mrs Otis Kimball left Friday for a business and pleasure trip through Colorado to the West coast.
About 80 people registered at Basin in the Chisos Mountains for the second annual Show Me Day excursion to Big Bend Park. Marathon Civic Club and Alpine Chamber organized the joint outing with park officials. Attendees included Ray H. Bostick of the San Angelo Chamber, Bill Billingsley of the San Angelo Standard Times, and A. Smith of the Henderson Rotary. The South Rim horseback trip covered 14 miles with a new trail offering views of Mt. Emory and Boot Canyon. A Lost Mine trail hike and a visit to park buildings were also on the agenda, capped by a 5:45 p.m. barbecue and a film by naturalist Peter Koch.
