The city of Alpine will begin a $4500 project using home labor next week to build a circular concrete reservoir of 300000 gallons for the water supply. City engineer J G Olmsted will oversee plans personally, and local workers will be employed to alleviate unemployment. The unit will be covered to keep the water clean.
Prospects for Coach Graves squad look to exceed last year’s Sul Ross team as uniforms are issued and first workouts held Tuesday. In town are several in-season players plus others visiting from Munday and Tescot as Berkeley hall meals and field conditions are noted. Budgeted equipment around $1200, with plans for a practice game before the Marfa contest on October 10.
County Commissioner T. M. Shely, seriously ill for six weeks, was reported very low yesterday with hopes for his recovery abandoned. He was taken to Marathon when his condition worsened, and no late Marathon report had been received as the Alliance went to press.
Sul Ross College officials prepare for the twelfth annual term with a projected enrollment near last year’s 400. Registration runs Sept 21 and 22, classes begin Wednesday, sub-college classes start Monday with football camp. Five new PhD-qualified instructors join the faculty. no MA courses offered this winter. Agriculture courses return with expanded offerings. Dormitories and campus facilities receive upgrades including library additions worth $5,000.
The local woman's auxiliary to the American Legion becomes a unit of the national group after receiving the charter. Secretary Mrs J T Davis said the charter arrived. A meeting Monday night planned an Armistice day program with the Legion and they asked the state president for info on local needy families. Eighteen active members with new additions each week.
About 200 teachers from ten Texas counties attended the Trans-Pecos institute held in Alpine with sessions led by Enos Gary, Eva Brown, and Lacy Hoard. The Highland fair premium list warns of poultry shows, livestock, fruit and vegetable prizes, parades, polo, and football events at Marfa and Fort D. A. Russell grounds, with gate fees and a barbecue launch day.
The Marfa Bucks begin preparations for their first game of the season under Coach Horace Oliver. Players have trained since Monday in fundamentals, with expectant matches ahead against Banderson and other teams. Contined on Page
Alpine residents have formed a horseback riding club with thirty seven members now enrolled. The academy run by Bob Owens offers instruction and access to fourteen horses kept at Hancock barn near the college campus. Members ride at dawn and dusk and plan to expand as school opens, with riders from various local professions.
The First Cavalry Fort Russell will stage its final Marfa show Sunday afternoon before sending the team to Fort Bliss for the Big Bend event. Lieutenant Colonel Robert M. Cheney invites Alpine and Marfa horse lovers to attend. Jumping courses rise over four feet with new classes including touch and out, handy hunter, and an Olympic course over seven-foot jumps. No admission charged.
The Rev. D. J. Murray, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Alpine, returned Wednesday from a two month leave. He studied at Chicago Presbyterian Theological Seminary during the trip while Dr. Elmer Ferguson of Houston filled the Alpine pulpit in the first month. Mrs. Murray and the children visited relatives in San Angelo and are expected home soon. Murray will preach both morning and evening services this Sunday.

A Hot Springs party visited the Sada mine forty two miles south of Boquillas in the Del Carmen range. They found workers Juan Sada J E Mall and W H Dodd at the site near the old Fronta Retsa mine famed for silver. The camp rests by Big Draw and a cold stream with ore piles awaiting proper machinery. Langford reports a three mile climb to the mine through cedar and plum groves and a waterfall village setting.
Two more boys were initiated into the Le Frere chapter of the DeMolays proving active membership up to thirty three, according to scribe Bill Helps. The new members are John Kokernot and Benson Cook.
Senator B F Berkeley left Tuesday morning for Austin to attend the governor called cotton special session. Debates split groups on reducing acreage, farmer autonomy, or adopting Huey Long’s Louisiana plan to curtail cotton for a year. Sterling aims to conclude the session this week.
The American Red Cross after investigation refused to aid families in Valentine sleeping in the streets due to earthquake damage. A report said tents borrowed from the army were adequate and most buildings could be repaired with expense. Twenty families reportedly lived in the streets amid distress tied to general economic conditions. J B Harman and daughter Benita arrived in Alpine for a visit from Warrensville South Carolina. Fred Daugherty accompanied them.
Members of the Alpine American Legion will elect officers for the ensuing year at the regular meeting to be held at the courthouse next Friday night. The group recently adopted by laws enabling the election and other actions by October 20. Hopson notes 57 active members and 15 new names promised for 1952. he cites 121 Brewster County veterans from WW II. Dues are due by November 15 to be sent to national headquarters, under the current post commander Major Harry Pishers.
Flower lovers across the southwest are urged to enter the Liberty Hall show in El Paso from October 9. Organizer H Palm promises a grand display with specimens from Marfa Alpine Roswell Silver City Tucson Deming Albuquerque Las Cruces Mesilla and more. No entry fee and communications for outside entries go to Mrs L B Kennicott.
Alpine will start classes Monday for over 800 students across the district. The opening program at the junior high auditorium begins at 9 am under Superintendent D. M. Major. The district has hired 85 experienced teachers, with many holding BSA degrees, and renovations and new equipment were added to all buildings.
Miss Onnie Mae OBrien a four year Alpine resident died after Mayo Brothers operations in Rochester. She studied at Sub Ross college and taught near El Paso. An actress in Toebound, she gained local fame and helped lead a Fort Worth bound production. Funeral held at the ancestral home in Dimmitt with Rev L W Bridges officiating. She leaves father, mother, five sisters and four brothers, and was about 24 at her death.
