Miss e serves as note web correspondent in Marathon to recruit subscribers and renewals aiding the town’s map effort. Local visitors include George McSpadden in Friends, Palmer French at Decie ranch, and Miss Paloma Hargis’s trip to Maria. Occasional dances, picnics, and social visits anchor a busy weekend scene.
Alpine Public School opened with a large crowd of patrons in attendance. The program featured Rev W P Ray, Rev H J Reemister, and soloist Kathryn Williams, as the district welcomed a promising year with new teachers, book distributions, and plans for baseball and basketball. Senior class enrollment and the need for extra teachers in the Mexican ward were noted, along with awards, scholarships, and garden contests for 1920 era programs.
Supt. E W McDonald presided as Marathon High School opened last Monday September 8 enrolling 105 pupils. Misses Surnam and Others assisted with enrollment and issuing books as staff kept busy welcoming new students.
Bishop Coadjutor Clinton of Texas plans a two day event in Galveston with 1,000 delegates. The Diocese aims to awaken religious activity across seven thousand members, featuring six hours daily of religious work and social gatherings including a weekend dinner dance at the city’s largest hotel. A youth conference and social affairs program are planned as highlights. John L. Browne and Mrs Browne of San Antonio, visiting with Mr and Mrs M S Burke, traveled from Columbia and Alaska.
A Chicago executive from Acme Packing argues wholesale grocers are logical food distributors and warns that a monopoly would enslave Americans. He advocates free competition to defeat economic autocracy while supporting government action to eradicate bovine tuberculosis. Also notes John F. Caswell’s return from Alpine to Austin with friends expressing welcome.
Mrs C D Wood chairs a local appeal urging Brewster Red Cross to recruit 20,000,000 members from November 3 onward. Alfred Fairbank, manager of the Southwestern Division, American Red Cross of St Louis, urges chapters to direct citizens to join and support the endowment effort through the nationwide drive.
Brewers County reports Marathon Oil No 1 Gage well rigging at location on Paygout Creek area. No 2 Gage ranch well also rigging. No 3 Combs and Skinner wells listed as locations. Pyle No 1 Alien test deep wells slated. J D Jackson contracts with Sanford Ray to drill three wells on James ranch near Altuda within forty days.
