San Antonio Texas August 30 1919 Mr J D Jackson Alpine Texas placed on program for address at Old Time Trail Drivers Assn reunion September 10 11 at Gunter Hotel San Antonio. Saunders San Antonio says unable to give speech but may share few early days roundups with the boys.
Frank Rooney and family of Marathon moved in last Saturday and will occupy the Anderson residence in the western part of town. RR Youngblood and family arrived from their alfalfa farm south of Pecos and will live west of the Courthouse. The families are welcomed and seek the benefits of Alpine High School.
The Trans-Pecos Teachers Institute convenes in Alpine with broad county participation from Presidio Jeff Davis Terrell and Brewster. Dr Irving and Dr Shurter of Texas State University deliver principal lectures as many teachers attend sessions and programs.
A roster of individuals from various towns and backgrounds appears, including Edith Ker, Flennor Ellison, Agnes ith, Mrs. E. C. Reddock, Inez i Brown, Mrs. Orline Ghotson, Mattie Terry, A. B. Greene, Drucillo Brito, Celestina Rodriguez, Mannie Bean, Vernon Hightower, J. E. Gregg, J. C. Machuea, J. B. Conner, Ima Chavez, Stella Young, and Virginia Thomas.
Austin seeks the historic Twin Sisters cannon once given by Louisiana to Texas. A warrant for their return stands as local custodian records vanish. Confederate veteran John Cosgrove and librarian E W Winkler search Alpine and Texas University leads for the relics feared misplaced after San Jacinto battles.
W C Smoot, his wife, W Sparman and family arrived home after an extended fishing trip down near the Rio Grande below Marathon. Heavy rains stalled them two draws from the river for several days. They were unable to reach the river but remain eager to try again.
School opens September 8 with one day for book distribution. Students are asked to bring last year’s books as the state pays cash for them.
The Avalanche notes J W Ferguson, an Aliest citizen, will change his paper from Bremen Texas to Vicksburg Mississippi during a short visit. He mentions leaving Tom with Clifton and hopes Mrs Ferguson's health improves with the care of many friends while they are away.
Mrs J L Crawford and daughter Miss Eva leave Alpine for Phenix Arizona where Eva will attend college. They are joined by daughter Mrs Lee Herrington who will spend the summer on the ranch with her husband. Friends regret their departure but wish them well and better success ahead.
Rev. Percy R. Knickerbocker of El Paso, pastor of Trinity Methodist, visits Alpine next week. He will speak at the school auditorium at 9 a.m. and at the Methodist church Monday through Wednesday nights, with eight o clock services each evening. Residents urged to come early for seats.
J T McFarland arrived in Alpine to assume general manager duties for the Rainbow Mining Company at Terlingua. A Arizona law expert, he has spent 28 years in the state and recently toured into New Mexico and Texas. He called at the Avaanche and left orders for supplies while greeting locals.
The Board of Inquiry describes a wreck near Alpine involving an extra eastbound freight on August 24 at 12:30 a.m. Damage totals $7,000 with fault not on crew but wheel inspection. Lee Harrington attended the Old Settler's Celebration at Van Horn and won rope and goat roping prizes.
DeVoe and their relatives left Texas on Sunday to return to Tempe Arizona. The group had spent six weeks in the area and traveled by automobile. They are associated with Presidio Oil Co and expect to resume work soon at the Shea M. Wilson ranch.
