Sul Ross State College opens 1966 67 registration with more than 600 freshmen expected to file through the new Health Physical Education Building. Transfer students register today while upperclassmen and freshmen follow a staged plan based on last name initials.
Sul Ross State University announces 14 new faculty for the 1966 67 year led by Dr Norman L McNeil president. New hires include Alicia Bounds art instructor from Weatherford Raymond L Cook music instructor and band director from St Jo Jack Crawford industrial arts instructor from Calhoun Eddie M Dry business administration economics instructor from Eastland Harry L Krenck history instructor from Elgin Louis Palmer McCown Baptist Student Union director from Hillsboro William David Powell English instructor from Cleveland Bryant D Truitt business administration instructor from Houston Tom E Sullenberger English instructor from Bryan Romeo M Flores geology assistant professor from the Philippines James Bracher English assistant professor from Dallas Gerald Stockton basketball coach and physical education instructor from Oklahoma James N Lewis education assistant professor from St Frances Gunther Moller mathematics physics associate professor from Hamburg and others.
The Avalanche records show August rainfall nearing a record, with 6.91 inches by noon yesterday. The prior August high was 7.20 inches in 1942, while August measurements in Alpine have run higher than other city points all summer.
Walter Parr, director of the Big Bend Community Action Committee, inspected flood damage at Presidio yesterday. He checked on the condition of the new water system and related infrastructure.
A proposed dike south of Alpine’s A Mountain to hold flood waters and recharge wells is under study by the Army Corps of Engineers. Re-routing the Southern Pacific tracks could free the current right of way for U S Highway 90 traffic. Ken Esmond and Wade Howell presented a Master Plan outlining land use, repairs, parks, and streets at a City Council meeting with the local Planning Committee.
Lobos of Ross State College continue two-a-day workouts as they prepare for a September 10 season opener against Texas Lutheran College in Seguin. Ranked No 2 among small colleges in the nation, they seek cohesion with about 56 players remaining in fall drills and coach David Slaughter optimistic about the offense.
The U S Department of Labor approves a Neighborhood Youth Corps plan for Brewster Jeff Davis Presidio Reeves Culberson and Terrell Counties. It will fund 199 youths ages 16 to 21 with a total cost of 121000 of which 106620 is federal aid. Program runs 38 weeks in the school term for 75 and 12 weeks in summer 1967 for 124. Alpine Marfa Balmothea Presidio Toyah Valentine receive term slots. Marfa ISD serves as fiscal agent with Supt H G Adams coordinating.
Charley Vaught of South Coast Life Insurance Co. was elected president of the Alpine Junior Chamber of Commerce at a special board meeting last Friday night. Richard Bowers resigned, with Phil W. Ebensberger and Jim Rice filling board seats. Vaught announced plans for a Labor Day Rest Stop eight miles east of Alpine and urged Sul Ross students and hometown Jaycees to join. Meetings take place Tuesdays at 7:30 in the First National Bank Community Room.
J W Red Pattillo was chosen president of the Alpine Buck Boosters Club at an organized Monday night gathering in the American Legion Home. Officers include Kenneth Clouse as vice president Matilde Pallenez as secretary and Joe Lane as treasurer.
Mourning dove season starts at noon today in Brewster Jeff Davis and Presidio Counties and runs through sunset with a daily bag limit of 12 and 24 in possession after day one. Whitewing season adds Sept 3 4 5 9 10 11 with a 12 daily limit plus 24 in possession. Hunters must plug guns for three shell capacity and keep one feathered wing as required.
