George Mills was re-elected by landowners in subdivision No. 3 to serve another five year term as supervisor of the Big Bend Soil Conservation district. He has actively served the district for the past three years.
Alpine Chamber of Commerce approves a resolution praising local service station dealers and their employees as ambassadors of goodwill, vital to Alpine’s economy and community life, noting their role in guiding visitors, supporting local businesses, and maintaining transportation. The document cites their integrity, service, and broad civic involvement. Signed by M. C. Kay, president.
Dates, times and places for Kipine events and meetings are listed. Sundays urge church attendance. various weekly assemble at Legion hall, hotel ro taria and churches. Monthly and weekly meetings include Legion hall sessions, V F W Post 7207, Troop Leaders roundtable, district committee, Scout commissioner meeting, Rotary Club at Holland hotel, and Pilot Cub at Merland hotel.
Alpine Rotary club announces Ladies Night combined with an inter city meeting on Thursday Oct 25 at the Holland hotel instead of the regular noon luncheon. Bob Clark a magician and ex Sul Ross football star will perform with music by Joe Bellamah and 30 speeches planned. Attendees from Alpine Marfa Van Horn Sander von Pecos and Monahans invited. Banquet at 7 20 pm. tickets sold at Kandy Kitchen Alpine Drug Store and Avalanche office.
Sul Ross State College schedules homecoming for October 27 with Javelinas visiting Jackson Field and an 8 p.m. football game, plus a 10 a.m. assembly, open house, and dance. The college también plans its third intercollegiate rodeo at Marfa November 15-17, counting toward the 1952 national all around championship, with Sul Ross leading in points.
A magnetic nail picker has been routed to the district by the late highway department and will soon be in the area. D. C. Greer notes the operation will interest motorists and two photos in this issue show the machine and a collection of about 2000 punctures.
Southwest Texas State Bobcats defeated Sul Ross Lobos 14 to 7 in Alpine. Despite Sul Ross dominance in offense early the Lobos failed to cross the goal line twice while Bobcats found scoring in the second and fourth quarters. First downs favored Sul Ross 16 to 13 with Lobos passing limited.
Alpine Bucks edged Fort Stockton Panthers 19-12 in a tight second conference 5A game at Fort Stockton. Odie Palmer left with a foot injury early. key plays featured Duane Smith passes to Hernandez and Hammons rushing for a score. The game remained close into the second quarter as both sides traded momentum.
Ist Lt John D Young and Jam ay visit his parents in town from Anchorage Alaska where he has served as an Army Air Force instructor He was seriously injured in a plane crash last July 1 and has been sent back to the States for further treatment and will report to Camp Hood
Big Bend Post 79 hosted a Legion convention in Alpine October 13 14 with about 300 Legionnaires. Activities included a memorial service, speeches by Judge Alan Fraser and others, a noon barbecue at Decie Ranch, business sessions at Alpine High School and the Legion Hall, plus district officer elections.
The Marta Community Concert Association opens its season with soprano Carolyn Long in a concert at Marta High School Auditorium Monday October 22 at 8 o clock. The event marks the association’s first program of the season.
The PTA carnival is planned for Wednesday October 31 at the high school with parade from Central School at 6 p m and booths opening after the procession Readings and reports were given at a Central School PTA meeting including prize details for the parade and booth fund deposits Members noted 136 Central PTA members and nursery arrangements for the event plan were discussed for next page publication
Fort Davis reports no new polio or related illnesses in the past week. About 50 schools are slated to reopen Monday, October 22. Drinking water tests from wells used by families of the three prior cases show no contamination. Albert Fryar and Eddie Webster, treated at Abilene hospital, were reported favorable as of October 18.
Work on the Drive-In Theatre west of town on Highway 90 continues under construction led by Mr. J T Davidson. He says the opening date will be announced soon and the project has been named The Twin Peaks Drive-In Theatre.
Secretary of State John Ben Shepperd will address a joint Alpine Rotary Lions and Pilot clubs meeting on November 6 at the Holland hotel. Invitation extended by Hugh White with Dr. Craig Spencer coordinating arrangements. White arranged for Shepperd to fly in private plane for the Alpine event, previously slated for Marfa. Local Rotary Lions and Pilots leaders Otis Scales John Richard Whiteside and Miss Anne Whittaker named attendees.
Ede ward M. Swann a former Alpine resident aged 43 died in an automobile crash Sunday. Funeral held Tuesday in Rotan, where his family home stood. Survived by widow and two children. Swann attended Sul Ross College and worked for the Avalanche at various times before 1942. The notice also mentions Mrs. Henry Bailey returning from Oklahoma City with her husband after a Dallas trip to see the Texas-Oklahoma game.
