New TDG Unit Planned Here in Alpine

Officer material is studied this week to organize a full Texas Defense Guard unit named Company A of the 2nd Battalion for Alpine. About 30 college boys in military science and former members of a 16th battalion company will enlist, joined by high school youths, to form a 75 plus man force. Army officers urged enlistment as preliminary training, with the college group serving as a platoon coordinating training with Sul Ross courses, aiming to exceed 100 in Alpine. Alpine Man Burned Extinguishing Kitchen Stove Blaze

J. Sug Carter suffered serious facial burns while trying to put out a fire at the Carter home in West Alpine Tuesday afternoon. The kerosene stove overflow caused oil to ignite a 4 pan. the kitchen suffered considerable damage with smoke intrusion elsewhere. No insurance was carried on the residence.

Alpine faces housing for officers and civilian workers as construction winds down. The chamber of commerce reports rentals for workers were handled well though some excess pricing occurred. Brewster County War Price and Rationing board announces Ration Stamp No 9 allows three pounds of sugar from November 1 to December 15. Announcement timing follows monthly schedule, with an August 7 exception for September October allotments due to a bonus. Brewster County Men Inducted At Fort Bliss Em Army Service

A large group of Brewster County men was inducted at Fort Bliss on October 7 and ordered to report for duty October 20. Inductees include Alvino Levario and Jacinto Carrillo from Terlingua, Santiago Hinojos, Abel Vega Jr., and Pablo Morales Rodriguez among others. A second group inducted October 8 will report October 21, with members from Marathon and Terlingua and officers training school volunteer Jake W Beasley among those listed.

Fall Livestock Movement From Highland Area Expected Soon

Fall movement of cattle from the Highland area is expected to begin within the next two weeks with some shipments already made. About five percent of calves in the area have been sold at prices around 2 and 13 cents per pound. The fall lamb movement is practically over, bringing an average of around 11 cents per pound.

A Wednesday meeting in Alpine formed the Brewster county Gasoline Rationing Panel to oversee rationing and car registration starting November 9. Alpine Chamber Manager to Speak at PTA Meeting

Glenn Burgess, manager of the Alpine chamber of commerce, will address the Parent-Teacher Association on the topic Knowing Co operating Agencies in Your Community. The third grade will present a program. The meeting is Oct. 19 at 4 30 pm in the High school auditorium.

Alpine Area Gets More Moisture

The Alpine area received the first rain of consequence since September 23 Monday night, totaling .52 inches at Sul Ross College. The October rainfall brought the yearly total to 14.60 inches, with the wet spell aiding dry pastures cited by ranchers as beneficial.

Court Denies Action to Keep Candidate's Name Off Ballots

Quo warranto petitions sought to restrain county clerk J W Frazer from listing H C Hernandez as Democratic nominee for Brewster County Commissioner on the general election ballot. Judge H O Metcalfe heard the case last Thursday and denied injunctive relief with the motion to dismiss sustained. Hernandez led in both July and August primaries.

Alpine students rally for scrap drive piles over 100000 pounds

Pupils from Alpine high and junior high schools collected about 17000 pounds so far with more to follow as they vie for top class honors. Proceeds go to the Red Cross and a $5 war savings stamp awaits the winning class. County scrap chairman notes nearly 100000 pounds deposited, with a care load set for shipment next Wednesday.

Formal Opening of New Baptist Church at Fort Davis

Fort Davis observed the formal opening of the First Baptist Church building last Sunday with Sunday school, a morning sermon by Rev. Horace C Goodman, and an open house from 4 to 6 pm. Visitors viewed the building, a musical and prayer service arose, and Rev. A L Miller gave a piano recital. 65 people registered with guests from Pecos Sadler Belton. gifts included a portrait of Rev. L R Millican.
