Bighorn Transplants and Local Notes From West Texas

Four bighorn sheep including two ewes and two rams now reside in the Black Gap Wildlife Management Area in Brewster County Texas. Twenty-five additional bighorns are planned as broodstock. Hunting of bighorns has been closed in Texas since 1906. School District Valuations To Be Discussed At Tuesday Meet

Alpine Independent School District plans to discuss a proposed increase in property valuations at the regular school board meeting next Tuesday night October 14. The 7:30 p.m. session at the High School Building invites public attendance as the district tries to raise revenue with a new tax office. Board President J C Coleman noted uncertainty on timing while an attorney studies the issue. Tax Collector Assessor Jack Joyce aims to open the new office at 5th Street and Avenue E around October 15.

Bucks Idle After Loss to Sonora Bronchos

Alpine High School’s Bucks were shut out 6-0 by Sonora, with 14 first downs for the Bronchos and 4 for the Bucks. Sonny Sykes scored for Sonora in the second, as Alpine fumbled twice near scoring chances. Coaches Bromley and Cade said the open week offers a needed breather before a five game stretch.

Mrs Bell 75 Laid To Rest In Alpine Funeral Services

Mrs Levi Bell 75 longtime Alpine resident died at home early Thursday in Oct. Funeral services were held at First Methodist Church and burial followed at Elm Grove Cemetery Pallbearers named from Alpine and Marfa. Two Airmen Missing After Rio Grande Search

Millsap 47 and an unnamed companion flew a Piper Tri-Pacer from Presidio toward Alpine to refuel and reach Odessa after viewing flood at the Rio Grande. The search spanned 250 miles from Presidio with Air Force Civil Air Patrol and private planes joining. A sighting of wreckage near Santa Elena Canyon in Mexico yielded only oil barrels.

Antelope Kills Tallied Across Alpine Marfa Hunts

Game Warden Sanford DeVoll reports 733 hunters joined three antelope shoots in Alpine Marfa Van Horn Sierra Blanca and Kent. A total of 684 antelope were killed with Alpine drawing 350 animals by 374 hunters and Marfa yielding 334 from 359 hunters. One violation was filed in Alpine for double kill. no violations or accidents elsewhere. The third hunt continues in Van Horn Sierra Blanca and Kent, with 166 permits issued.

Planes Bring 135 To Alpine For Tour Stop

One hundred thirty five travelers in 54 private planes of the Texas Air Tours spent the night in Alpine. They arrived from across the United States and Canada and were hosted at a dinner by Alpine Chamber of Commerce aviation committee members. Carl Rusk led the tour as committee chairman. Planes departed Tuesday morning toward Van Horn and El Paso, with the tour ending in San Angelo.

Crash injures Mrs Bre Hart and granddaughter near McCamey

In a Saturday night collision near McCamey a station wagon carrying E B Watson of San Angelo and his three sons struck a truck driven by Thomas D Parker of Kermit. Mrs Bregg and granddaughter Phyllis Watson were hospitalized in Midland. Mrs Watson treated at McCamey Hospital.

Burglars Strike At Marathon And Alpine

Sheriff Jim Skinner reported burglars struck a French store in Marathon and the Circle W cafe in Alpine late Thursday night or early Friday. A quantity of clothing was taken in Marathon and about 65 cents in change from Circle W. Footprints suggested a female suspect. no arrests were made yet.

Lions Gather Clothing for Rio Grande Flood Victims

Alpine Club members launch a clothing drive for flood victims in Ojinaga Mexico. In cooperation with Lions Clubs of Presidio and Ojinaga, residents are urged to donate clothing bed covers and household items in good condition to the Alpine Community Center. City of Alpine will box label and ship items free via Lions clubs in Presidio Ojinaga for distribution. The drive will continue for several weeks.

Brewster County chapter of the American Red Cross sent food for 500 people in Santa Elena Mexico. A J Bierschwabe said 500 pounds of beans 500 pounds of flour and dried milk were delivered by Art Gard and Grant Woodward with Park officials to flood victims isolated by Rio Grande waters. Governor Teofilo Berunda appointed Mayor Jesus Rohana relief commissioner of northeastern Chihuahua.

The Texas Game Commission expands the Black Gap Wildlife Management Area in Brewster County by 18 313 acres through the Shurley property purchase. Moisture Penetration Surpasses Six Feet in Sunny Glen

Soil conservation technicians reported moisture penetration over six feet in grass covered areas of Sunny Glen last weekend. The measuring stick capped at six feet as the soil below remained very moist. In contrast bare ground showed penetration of about one inch.
