Old-Time Dress Display Parade At Barracks Porch

Local women present vintage dresses hats and shoes in a parade on the reconstructed barracks porch starting at 8 pm The program features barber shop style songs by a double male quartet in derby hats and hairy adornment a trio of young girls in costume and dance numbers to period tunes

Congressman J T Rutherford will tour his 18 county West Texas district with a mobile office stop in Alpine on Oct 15 from 8:30 am to 9:30 am opening downtown parking space. He plans earlier stops in Marathon and Marfa with a breakfast gathering and seeks larger turnout than past visits.

Rodeo Events Set Sunday at Mon Ramos Arena

West Texas riders from Fort Stockton Fort Davis Marfa Marathon Sanderson and Balmorhea will compete Sunday October 11 at 1 30 p m in rodeo events including jackpot roping ribbon roping bareback riding and barrel races at Mon Ramos Arena southwest of 4 Pine on John Lane road to Ward Ranger Canyon Sul Ross State College rodeo team members are among the entrants Ranch hands provide most contestants and Ramos thanks ranchers for horse entry and access.

Death Takes Mrs. Shirley in Alpine Home

Mrs. Fannie Viola Shirley died Monday night at her daughter's home in Alpine after living there three years. Born September 19, 18, in Bee County, she moved with her family to Brewster County in the 1890s, married Ed Shirley in 1900, and long resided in Marathon. Services were held at 2 pm Wednesday at Marathon Baptist Church with Rev. Pierce officiating. Burial followed in Marathon. Survivors include daughter Mrs. Leroy Granger of Alpine, sisters Mrs. Ata Rooney of Galveston and Mrs. Iam Gould of Tampa, Fla, brothers Albert and Pless Chambers of Marathon, three grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.

Sutton Rites Held For Uvalde Judge's Son

Joe W. Sutton 31 son of Mrs R. Sutton of Uvalde and district judge Sutton died in Houston. Funeral 2:30 pm Tuesday Pennington San Marcos with burial there. Survivors include son Glenn F. Sutton San Antonio. brothers Bruce Alpine Mimms Marfa and C R Sutton Jr. Uvalde. He was a Dallas Mortuary Science graduate and worked at Fogle West Funeral Home Houston.

Alpine Civic Leaders to Form Presidents Committee

Alpine Chamber of Commerce directors approve a plan by President Jack Stovell to form a Presidents Committee of the heads of all civic organizations. The panel will meet as needed to coordinate club activities and aid others, while also supporting the Sul Ross band travel for the Howard Payne game and planning a Homecoming parade float.

Homecoming Parade Plans for Alpine Area

A $250000 S A project is approved as Alpine gears up for a big homecoming parade on Saturday afternoon October 24. Parade chairman Dr. Clifford B. Casey urges civic clubs and merchants to enter float decorations and invites surrounding towns to participate. Sul Ross Band Day features the Sul Ross College marching band hosting visiting musicians with campus clubs invited to join.

Sul Ross State College to Add New Dormitory Wing

The board of regents approved a 250000 addition to Marquis Hall to house 0 to 100 men. Dr. Bryan Wildenthal said a FHA loan is being sought to fund the wing as dorm capacity is exhausted. Construction aims to begin within 60 to 90 days once authorized.

Rogers Buys King's Shop in Alpine

A. L. King sold his machine shop to Charles D. Rogers this week. Mr. and Mrs. King, longtime Alpine residents, will remain in Alpine with their beauty shop business past 23 years. The Rogers family, new to Alpine from Midland, have two children and bought the former G. P. Smith residence on the Old Marathon Road.

Bucks idle this week end after four straight defeats. They will travel to Crane on Friday night October 16 to resume grid wars. In Alpine last Friday Sonora blanked the Bucks 240 on a rain swept field.

Ditch Work Begins on 8 Inch Pipeline to City Limits

City crews start ditching for an 8 inch water line from Sunny Glen to the reservoir area with a new 3000 foot section of pipeline and connections to the high school area and Central School. The project aims to lower pumping costs via gravity and boost capacity up to 1000 gallons per minute in the Sunny Glen region. Mayor Lockhart said the system will serve a 10,000 population city and keep services ahead.

Virgil Pulliam of Alpine has been appointed assistant attorney general by Attorney General Will Wilson. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Pulliam and will reside at 520 Avon Place, Austin with his wife Barbara Jo Wills of Ft. Worth and their son Scott. Pulliam recently earned an LLB and is a 1953 Alpine High School graduate.
