Local Guard Maneuvers On Vernon Ranch Sunday
Three Texas State Guard units bivouacked at Vernon Mcintyre ranch Saturday night and moved three miles Sunday to Paisano peak base to repel simulated paratroopers. Despite cold dampness, troops camped without tents, covering 10 miles on foot and dining on three meals. Guard officers from Marfa Terlingua Alpine directed the exercise as part of statewide mobilization training. casualties from a Hondo aviation school crash near Alpine were also reported with five airmen killed.

WACs Arrive at Pilot School for Pilot Program
The first representation of the Women's Army Corps at the pilot school occurred Saturday with the arrival of First Lt. Sarah Golin and Second Lt. Mary E. Hayes. Pending enlistments, the officers will serve temporarily as assistant personnel officer and assistant adjutant respectively.

Drilling To Begin On Test Near Alpine Texas
Equipment is being brought in and drilling should start within a week on the old Dodson test 15 miles north of Alpine. W. B. Hinton of Lockhart has the contract to deepen a well abandoned in 1938 at 7,810 feet after tools were lost. Rotary will be used at Bec 86 block 10 GH and SA. A separate test near Vic Pierce ranch, 12 miles east of Alpine, shows no progress. Gulf Oil sub-leased 10 222 acres to Shamrock Oil and Gas for a test not less than 6,000 feet by May 17, 1944, with possible exploration to 9,500 feet. The block spans parts of blocks 300 and 306 GC and SF Ry 31 T C Ry 10 GH and SA Ry, with no definite location yet.

Pilot School Graduation Held Friday
Graduates from 37 states received wings at the advanced two engine pilot school at the West Texas base. Col George Flor tman urged timely action to help finish the war as soon as possible. Maj Daniel Webster administered the oath as spectators watched a shortened ceremony due to bad weather. GI enlisted men collected the traditional salute fee from graduates amid the post ceremony bustle.

Alpine Captain Joel Wright to be honored by Texas Historical Society
Dr Joel Wright of Alpine receives note that his son Captain Joel E Weight Army Air Forces is to be placed in the Hall of State archives for conspicuous service in World War II. Wright led troop transports in Sicily and earned the Air Medal. He served in Africa throughout the campaign and is expected home on leave within 10 days.

Nebraska Pilot Crashes Uninjured Near Chihuahua
Lt Richard L Peterson of the with Fighter Squadron, Ainsworth Neb, escaped injury when his P 39 fighter plane wrecked about 25 miles south of Ojinaga Chihuahua Mexico at 8 pm Monday. He was picked up at the scene by Lt Brook H Snow, assistant intelligence officer at the pilot school, notified by Fort D A Russell intelligence officers. Peterson was on a routine flight from his Nebraska base.

Pilot School commander Hartman to transfer to new station

Sgt. Elpidio H. Ramos aged 26 of Alpine is reported killed in action in North Africa on September 17. He volunteered early, joined an infantry unit, and entered the army before Pearl Harbor. Survived by parents Revero and Epimenia Ramos and four sisters. one sister is married to County Commissioner Hilario Hernandez.

State headquarters advised that Series E bond purchases through Oct 15 would count toward the quota, though officials doubt reaching 293,000.

John J. Criswell of Alpine, an aviation inspector at the flight school, invented an easy escape seat to improve bailout chances from AT-17 training ships.
