Alpine high school opened on their new field with a 31 to 0 win over Van Horn Eagles. A two-thirds full crowd watched Alpine dominate, with Marlin Robinson scoring early and Duane Smith and David Hernandez adding the other TDs. Hammons added two lengthy runs and Alpine controlled the game throughout.
A partial adult skull was found on the Earl McElroy Nine Point ranch, 60 miles south of Alpine, two miles north of the house near a water tank. Nearby ruins include a rock dugout and old oat pens. A local physician estimated the skull to be 10 to 20 years old and it was turned over to local authorities.
J. L. Kerby Sul Ross business manager returns from a British Columbia game hunt with a six point elk. He reports a spread of 46 14 inches and horn length of 46 1 2 inches. He walked 500 miles but found no sheep, goat, or bear.
This notice lists meetings and contact reminders for Alpine clubs and organizations. It notes that no additional details will be provided beyond the listed times and places, urging officers to telephone information in advance. Various groups meet at Legion hall, Lions Club Holland hotel, Presbyterian church, and hospitality rooms, with events on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and monthly/quarterly schedules, including a district convention October 13-14 for the American Legion.
Sara Beth Hawkins, Alpine High School graduate and Southern Methodist University freshman majorette, will represent Alpine as Sun Carnival Princess in El Paso. Hawkins has a long record of school and community activity, including Rainbow, yearbook editor, band, journalism, speech, and camp leadership. She studied at Camp Mystic and Drum Major's Clinic, traveled to England and the U K, and plans to return as Mystic Camp Counselor in 1982.
Building permits issued in Alpine fell to the year’s low in September at 3300 dollars, below the prior low of 5609 dollars. The month’s filings raised Alpine’s year total to 264700 dollars, naming residents Modesto Hernandez, Glenn F. Davis, Manuel Rodriguez, Earl Fallis, and George M. Bevier, with various adobe and garage additions noted.
A pair of six month old bobcats named Time For Supper and Chita were caught with two others by a trapper and given to Mr Bob, then to Mr and Mrs D E Walls of Alpine. The Wells say they have long kept wild animals and reptiles as pets, including monkeys, raccoons, foxes, parrots, snakes and alligators. The bobcats will be lured to Marsailes 300 of Dallas after about a year and a half.
The Lobos travel to Huntsville for the first conference game of the season against Sam Houston. Preseason results show Sam Houston with two wins and one loss. Bearkats quarterback Gottlob Don Cotton leads a high scoring offense with 953 passing yards this season. Injuries threaten both sides as Halback Jimmy Mobley and Frank Harrell may see significant action. The Lobos depart Alpine Saturday morning by air due to prison rodeo crowds, returning after the night game.
Dr Sinarian who opened offices here recently leaves for San Antonio to join the City Health Dept. As of this week Dr Dodd is no longer practicing veterinary medicine in Alpine. Mr Alonzo Mord and Clarence Hord Sr returned last weekend for a fishing trip at Lake Texoma.
Antelope hunting opens with 149 antelopes checked in Brewster and Jeff Davis counties on day one. Notables like Lt Gov Ben Ramsey and Dr W H Dickson joined, as the hunt moved to Presidio, Jeff Davis, Culberson and Hudspeth counties for the final three days.
Pvt. Rowdy Lynn Shackelford of Marathon Texas joined the 1st Cavalry Division in Korea, serving in the 7th Cavalry Regiment. A Marathon High School graduate class of 1948, he previously worked for Hunter Strain Highway Construction Co before enlisting February 8 1951. He was stationed at Camp Rucker Alabama before arriving in Korea.
Duncan, a Sul Ross college weather observer, notes Alpine received 1.42 inches of moisture in September. Last year’s September total was 3.72 inches, while year to date reached 10.96 inches, about six inches below the 1960 nine-month total of 16.44 inches. The main rainfall came on the 7th with 1.17 inches, then 0.10 on the 8th, 0.10 on the 10th, and 0.05 on the 11th and 12th.
Word was received this week of the death last Sunday of F M Steere age 88 at his home in Pomona California. Steere was engaged in the real estate business here for several years, leaving in 1997. He is survived by his widow and two sons.
Henry Bailey of Henry Bailey Motors mailed copies of the Sept 14 Avalanche to promote West Texas highlands. Donna Neely was named Alpine FFA Sweetheart 1951 52 in a campus contest. Bailey reports strong reader response and still has some copies available for distribution.
