Alpine Man Killed At S P A R Crossing In Texas Town

George H. Yates a 71 year old Alpine resident was killed instantly when his pickup truck was struck by a Southern Pacific passenger train at the 19th street crossing in the west part of town. The late Friday accident left the front end of the locomotive smashing the driver's side of the truck. Yates born March 1 1870 in Hunt County Texas had married Amanda Moore and moved to Guadalupe New Mexico in a covered wagon. He later engaged in ranching in New Mexico and Texas and was known for helping settle disputes between ranchers and settlers. Continued on last page.

Well Known Artist To Do Oil Portraits In Alpine

Harry Anthony DeYoung, a famed Southwest artist, will visit Alpine to paint a limited number of oil portraits at a modest fee. He can be reached via his San Antonio studio or through Miss Bernice Strawn at Sul Ross College. DeYoung has directed the Sul Ross Summer Art colony and is listed in Who's Who in Art and America.

Hunters Still Bang Away at Blacktail Deer Season Nears

Game Warden Ray Williams reports reduced deer numbers in the Big Bend area as the blacktail season closes next Sunday. He notes complete counts are impossible due to open territory outside hunting preserve licenses.

Antelopes Rounded Up by Airplane in Big Bend Effort

Streamlined roundup advances in Texas Big Bend as red winged plane guides antelopes into pens for restocking. Dr. Lee Fisher leads the program with J. Casparis aiding from Sul Ross. About 150 antelopes have been gathered so far with transport to Panhandle plains and Wichita Falls, amid challenging air maneuvers and netting traps.

Brewster County Adopts Cash Basis After Warrant Payoff

Brewster county Treasurer A B Sandifer called all outstanding General Fund warrants for payment last week, the first cash basis adoption in years. County Judge R B Slight praised the move though noting the ongoing demand on the commissioners court for heat, water, relief, salaries, and records while federal taxes rise and national defense shifts spending.

Big Bend film shown at TSTA meeting in Houston

Officials and teachers from across Texas witnessed the premiere of an all color Big Bend National Park film at the Rice Hotel during the Texas State Teachers Association convention. The show, produced by Paul McAllister for the Texas Big Bend Park Association, highlights the Chisos Mountains and Rio Grande canyons. Atomic consensus praises the film for unveiling Texas wilderness beauty previously unseen by many educators.

Firearms Collection Honoring Texas Ranger History at Sul Ross

A large donation brings Captain Townsend’s firearms and Ranger relics to the Big Bend Museum at Sul Ross College. The exhibit includes two complete gun collections, a 10 000 clipping scrapbook, and items donated by Capt. R. W. Aldrich and others. Highlights feature a 1818 flintlock musket, a two-trigger double action gun, a 44 calibre Yellow Belly, and weapons with a history of border conflicts.

Alpine Man to Panama Topographic Draftsman Duty

Carl Rogers received notice Wednesday of his acceptance in the civil service as a topographic draftsman for duty in the Panama Canal Zone and will leave December 9 to take up his duties there going from Brownsville by plane. His mother Mrs. C. P. Rogers will continue to make her home here.

40 Year SP Engineer Marred By Tragic Accident

A Southern Pacific passenger train struck a pickup at a railroad crossing killing the driver G. H. Yates. Andy Young of El Paso, a 40 year veteran engineer, said this was his first blemish in 40 years of service and only three runs remained before retirement. He was deeply distressed by the crash.

Attendees at the funeral last Saturday for G H Yates included his two sons J E and wife from Lubbock. Byron and wife from San Antonio. Mrs J A Simpson a sister. Mrs Marshall Atkinson a niece. Health Director to Visit County Towns Next Week

Latine American Health Education director for Texas Tuberculosis Association will visit Marathon next Tuesday morning to lecture and show pictures to Latin American school children. Firestone Auto Supply To Open In Alpine Next Week

Announcement of a Firestone Home and Auto Supply store opening in Alpine states the business will operate in the old Modern Garage quarters. Ralph Wise and Stanley Fulcher will run it. A full line of auto supplies and home appliances will be offered along with a repair shop and Chrysler and Plymouth agency, opening December 18.

Union Thanksgiving Service Held At Christian Church

A large crowd attended the Union Thanksgiving service at the Christian church Wednesday night. Rev. Ray B. McGrew delivered the message with clergy from Nazarene, Presbyterian, Baptist, and Christian churches assisting. A special anthem was sung by a choir from city churches under Mrs. Jack Davis's direction.
