A Trans Pecos column notes early mailing for Christmas parcels, reflects on 46 years of the Avalanche in Alpine, laments town support for local papers, and jokes about hunting, steak, and a Balmo thea burglary where a whole safe was stolen from a Balmo grocery store.
The Granada theatre Money Night prize for next week totals 175 dollars after the Tuesday drawing. John Holland Alpine, a Roswell New Mexico student, was named as the winner but was not present to claim the 150 dollar prize at the time.
Approximately 300 had been raised in the annual Red Cross Roll Call up to yesterday in Alpine alone. This is about 160 more than the amount raised in the entire county last year. Reports from Marathon and the river country will bring the total up appreciably. The county drive officially closed yesterday Thanksgiving Day. A few more contributions were listed by Roll Call Chairman Shults.
An engineer from the U S Post Office department has been on site for days marking property lines and sinking test holes for Alpine's planned $70,000 postoffice building. Work start date unknown, likely at least 60 days away. The building will sit on jets purchased from Mrs Ella Chasain opposite the county courthouse on North Sixth Street.
Families with old or broken toys and clothing are urged to donate to Alpine Junior High. The items will be repaired and repainted by the Junior Red Cross and art class, then distributed to needy children at Christmas. Call or bring items to the Junior High building for pickup.
Alan R. Fraser district attorney elect moved his offices this week from the county courthouse to the suite formerly occupied by Dr. W D Craddock in the Hord building.
Mrs. Jess Stewart of Alpine was slightly injured when a rifle left in a parked car was accidentally discharged by children playing nearby. The bullet passed through the car beside them and struck Mrs. Stewart in the calf, causing a painful but not serious wound.
Good progress 18 reported at the S. G. Smith Tony Hess test well drilled on the Deck ranch six miles west of Marathon. A depth of 500 feet was reached this week with a show of gas and oil at about 800 feet in the first hole. A cave-in paused work briefly but was cleared, the site located on Sec 7 block 1 GH&SA survey. Dodson Means test 18 miles northeast of Alpine shut down for a fishing job, with possible resumption next week.
Alpine reports a third of an inch of precipitation from a slow shower and light mist Monday. Cold mornings left ice on many days, with moisture aiding ranges in the region in the test condition for years. Observers note the rain was fairly general, especially north of Alpine.
C A Gilley left for Waco to join the annual Grand Chapter Roy al Arch Masons meeting. J C Cole rman also headed to the gathering with Mrs Coleman and daughter Rose Winnette. R J Ratliff, Alpine lodge master, will depart for the grand lodge meeting in the same division of Masonry in Waco.
A historical note recalls a 19th or early 20th century South Carolina statute urging law-abiding men to bring firearms to church on Sundays. The item frames the law as a cultural artifact reflecting period attitudes toward self defense and church life.
The Javelinas are heavy favorites for a Monday game at Kingsville against Sul Ross Lobos Texas A and I. The contest was moved from Laredo due to poor attendance, with a large crowd expected as Lobos draw well away from home. Graves’ squad plans full lineup including recovering injured players Warnock Gregg Archer. Graham ineligible.
Hunters face unusually harsh weather as the blacktail deer season near Pecos winds down with just days left. Early estimates suggest buck harvest is about half of last season, due largely to foul weather and lower buck numbers this year. Many hunters did not stay as long as in prior years, reducing overall activity in the Blacktail country.
Jett Davis reports that more bucks have passed through Fort Davis on hunters' cars than in the first days of the open blacktail season. Bucks have hidden in higher rough mountain areas, though hunting was good on some foothill land in Jeff Davis County.
Golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Jim P. Wilson observed in Alpine after postponement due to bad weather. Wilson, who arrived in Alpine in 1884, married Ella Walton of Beeville and built a ranch near Green Valley and a town home at College Ave and North Fifth St. Their two sons include County Commissioner Anja Wilson and J. A. Wilson.
CM McDonald of Wichita Falls and D M Harris of Archer City toured southern Brewster county to inspect the proposed Big Bend International park area. En route they visited Boquillas Grand Canyon Johnsons farm and the Chisos mountains with National Park board member E E Townsend.
Brewster county commissioners urged the State Highway Commission in Austin to take over Terlingua Road from Alpine to Terlingua. The court members stated no formal demand was made but believed the proposal would be favorably considered. Present were County Judge Anja Wilson Earl Clark W. D. Burehar and others before the highway panel.
Miss Jan Gentry of Alpine was elected Carnival Princess by local voters. The selection, in coordination with the Southeast event committee and El Paso information, designates a city representative for the carnival. If worthwhile goals exist, they are worth pursuing.
Representative Baptists from twelve West Texas counties converge in Alpine for the Pecos Valley Baptist association Work Conference. The event covers 29 churches across the largest territorial area in Texas. Leaders discuss Mexican mission work with State Board support, and the program features talks on Lottie Moon Offering and denominational goals.
Alpine businesses closed or kept Sunday hours as the community marked Thanksgiving. An early service at the Baptist church drew a fairly large crowd with Rev. M. M. Fulmer delivering the message. Sul Ross College and city schools dismissed midweek, with classes to resume Monday.
Unfavorable weather slowed cattle movement this week with 77 cars shipped from Alpine and nearby points, down from over 100 the prior week. Peak shipping expected to continue until after December. Packages include Kokernot & Son ten stocker cattle from Alpine and eleven from Hovey to Palomas Texas. Terry one load yearlings to El Paso. Goucher five loads to LeGrande California. Benson one load to Brawley. Peyton one load calves and mixed to El Paso. Joe G Smith stocker cattle to Salem Nebraska. Kokernot Wilmington DCo six mixed cattle from Hovey. Chancellor confined cattle to El Paso. Mellard two mixed cattle from Casa Piedra to Marsh Town. Kays two mixed cattle from Casa Piedra to Los Angeles.
Sul Ross college and city schools faculty will attend the Texas State Teachers Association meeting in Ft Worth. Attendees include Miss Laiie Britt Miss Annie Kate Ferguson Miss Clemma Billingsley Dr Jund Mrs Norman Spencer Miss Rita Massey H W Morelock president Sal Ross C Shaffer and Mrs Shaffer. Fletcher principal Alpine High school left Wednesday to attend the meet. Petcher chairs the Industrial Arts division and serves on the Texas Vocational board. Morelock departed with the board earlier in the week.
