Mayor Lockhart declares meters on Alpine streets help both citizens who park and businessmen who need space. He argues meters are not punishment, note inefficiencies harm parking, and revenues fund police and traffic control. He warns cuts require tax increases and calls for attracting industry to utilize excess water capacity.
Peripatetic educator Joie Armstrong in Port-au-Prince shares Christmas poetry while Alpine, California, community notes discuss education, subscriptions, and a move by the Collins family from West Monroe to Alpine. Allen Russell of the Austin Senators teases a minor league package for fans, including a Silver Platter Club membership and game access perks.
AL Men and former Sul Ross State College coach Milch resigned as Big Spring High School football coach effective last Monday night. His contract, due to run until June 4, 1960, was bought out by the Big Spring School Board. Milch named no immediate plans but wished to stay in football. Curtis Kelley, Alpine High School coach before joining Milch, has not said if he will remain. Milch, a San Angelo High and Hardin-Simmons star, went 4 25 1 in three seasons, with a 0 1 0 record this year.
W H Terry Jr reports completion of a stock tank at his Goat Mountain ranch. Local technicians from the Big Bend Soil Conservation District staked the fill and designed the spillway. Terry becomes a cooperator with the district as plans support stock water security. Mrs Lee Smith and family have returned from Oklahoma City after visiting relatives.
Trans-Texas Airways officials praised the Civil Aeronautics Board decision renewing the Marfa Alpine route for five years. L J Eichner cited local Alpine and Marfa leaders whose testimony aided recertification. The board requires a minimum 150 passenger boardings monthly to justify service and will review progress periodically under Use it or lose it. Pecos shift to El Paso Midland Odessa route may boost local boardings as the service continues.
Southwestern Bell Telephone Co purchases one lot and part of another for future growth in Alpine. The property, 66 feet by 130 feet, fronts North 6th Street and was bought from Mr. and Mrs. C.K. Smith of Marfa. Manager Richard Turner notes no immediate plans for construction and that the present S-room residence on the site will be moved later.
Dr Allen Briggs professor of English at Sul Ross will discuss modern poets in the United States as part of the Sut toss Lectures on Modern Books and Writing series. The Monday night talk begins at 7 30 in the Fine Arts Auditorium on the campus and is open to students faculty and townspeople.
Tom Tipps a former Sat 1608s college football star helped the University of Washington reach the Rose Bowl to face Wisconsin on New Year’s Day. Tipps, an end tackle and blocking back, had coached at Texas A&M after a period as a Texas high school coach. He earned praise from Seattle reporters as a brilliant tactician and key aide to coach Jim Owens, with strong notes on game film study for top opponents and the Huskies’ standout Ray Jackson. Tipps’ wife Frances Cotter hails from Alpine, now connected with Boy Scout Camp duties in the Davis Mountains.
El Paso and Albuquerque seek working agreements with major league clubs to join the Sophomore League, which would expand to eight teams. Current teams include Alpine with the Red Sox, Hobbs with the Pirates, Carlsbad Cubs, Artesia Giants, Odessa Dodgers, Plainview Athletics, plus two potential additions. John Phelan, El Paso Sports Association president, says contacts are under way and the territory is cleared for operation. The league begins with a clean slate and strong enthusiasm.
Most stores close today as Thanksgiving is observed in Alpine and surrounding Davis Mountains County. Alpine Public Schools and Sul Ross College dismissed classes yesterday. classes resume Monday morning, Nov 30. A community service at First Christian Church begins at 9 a.m., with several churches planning services. more church service details are on Pages 1B and 1B.
Dr Henry L Bagley a former Sul Ross journalism professor and Kansas State College journalism director will publish articles on public relations in professional education journals this fall He will have pieces in School and Community and Pride Magazine outlining methods to educate and influence critics of American public education The Colorado educated educator earned a doctorate in educational public relations and has advised campus publications and edited the alumni magazine since 1956
Sul Ross State College will start the basketball season December 7 at home against St. Michael’s, with a follow up December 9 against New Mexico Western, then away games against NM Western. Conference opener is January 4 at Brownwood against Howard Payne. The team faces a rebuilding year after graduation of three starters. Key losses include Trevino Powell Osbourne. returnees include Menterson Motraw Sims Shields Hudson Coffee. transfers Smith Dobbins. freshmen O'Donnell Reed.
The American Legion Auxiliary explains how Christmas funds are spent including about 125 for a game table at Austin State School plus items for therapy and coordination of movement for exceptional children. Also mentions candy and small gifts, with additional support for Sulfless College teachers and local child welfare projects.
Big Bend area ranchers and State Game Dept officials predict one of the finest black tail deer seasons in history as the 8 day hunt opens Tuesday December 1 west of the Pecos. About 6000 hunters expected to participate in a three county contest with prizes donated by Alpine merchants. The largest head prize is a Winchester 270 rifle and a Remington 22 semiautomatic is the drawing prize. Hunters must register paying $1 and may obtain application blanks at service stations hotels and motels. A gun expert will be on duty three days before opening to adjust sights and assist hunters free of charge.
The 8 inch water pipeline from sunny to the city limits is nearly done with minor finishing. Main crossings at Highway So West Plum Street and Highway 9 West are completed. A ditching machine sits before the High School Football Field. Officials expect full connection before Christmas and relocation of about three quarters of a mile of pipe in Gunn Glen before Feb 1. Plans for a February Bonus Water Month include advising citizens to water outside freely and beautification efforts.
