Longhorn cattle used in John Wayne film near Brackettville

The herd including Longhorns from Cap Yates and other ranches was loaned for a scene in The Alamo film starring John Wayne. The cattle, insured at 1500 dollars each, will appear in a dramatic nighttime sequence as Wayne's Col. Crockett and his Tennesseans feed the fort. Nearby hunting crowds and local updates fill the Big Bend area month with holiday activity.

Alpine Cage Teams To Enter Tournaments

Alpine High girls beat Grandfalls to win both A and B games in an open at Grandfalls. Coach Mrs. Faye Davis took 30 players as Alpine meets Clint at 9 a.m. in the Van Horn Tournament. Virginia Espinosa led A with 11 points, followed by Stone and Vick.

Buck Band to Compete at Odessa Interscholastic Music Contest

The Buck Band led by drum major Jerry Armstrong will travel Saturday from Alpine to Odessa for the Region VII UIL music contests. About 35 area schools compete across divisions. featured are marching and required movements judged as a team and individually. Band members include numerous named players across woodwinds brass and percussion with Leland Schultz remarking two buses will transport the ensemble.

Boy Scouts Honor Badges Awarded At Church Court

Boy Scout Troop 41 at First Methodist Church held a court of honor Monday night. Tenderfoot badges went to Shaw Skinner Robert Simms Richard Whiteside Mike Stuckwish Guy Moore Crawford Tim Eichholtz Robert Haas of Apache troop Bill Burling Harris Simms Bobby Simms Robert Graham Guy Woodruff Larry Jortison Allan Newsom and Jim Toark of Bear troop. Second class badges went to John Conder Robert Hindman Benny Wright and Pat McAfee and first class to Arthur Hafner and Charles Ohlund. Scout Master Carl Williams Jr. received a star badge and Russell McAfee a life badge. A skit was presented by each troop with about 50 visitors including two leaders and five boys from... Rev. Robert Baird attended along with troop committee members. Refreshments were served. Williams was named to attend the National Jamboree in Colorado Springs next summer. School Bus Begins New Town Schedule

An education trial starts Tuesday with a bus running between New Town and Centennial School. Officials report many problems but say seven eligible children live in the area and the route aims to improve attendance during the coldest weather. The service will operate for four months.

November rainfall totals and yearly precipitations

Weather records by D M Bennett show rainfall for the year reaching 13 inches. November contributed 0.69 inches with most falling on the 3rd and 14th after a light snow and slow rains. The prior November totaled 0.3 inches and the Hi month period 2.68 inches.

E H Todd Laid To Rest Pioneer Rancher Dies at 87

E H Todd 87 a Brewster County rancher died Tuesday at his son Jack Todds home in Marathon Funeral services were held at the Marathon Methodist Church with Rev Jim Reeves and burial in Marathon Cemetery under Livingstons direction He is survived by four daughters and a son born in Mason County in 1872 he moved to Brewster County in 1910 ranching in the Chisos Mountains and later served about ten years as Marathon postmaster

Jerry Gray former Texas Ranger dies at 74 in Arkansas

Jerry Gray a retired Texas Ranger died Saturday in Everton Arkansas where he had lived eleven years after leaving Presidio. Funeral services were held in Harrison Arkansas. He is survived by his wife and son. Gray served as a constable in Temple Texas and his first ranger assignment was in Austin near San Marcos Bend.

Sohl Fights Poll Tax in Texas Campaign

Sohl of Alpine, chair of Brewster County Democratic Committee, backs an abolition drive for the poll tax. Change Asked For Land Suit

EL PASO An estate valued at more than 1 million dollars is the stake in a suit to move it from Brewster County to U. S. District Court in El Paso. Mrs. Mary Neville Oliver seeks to clear title to a West Texas ranch and other assets valued at 500000, 350000 in Arizona land plus stock cash and jewelry. The case hinges on a will dated Oct. 2, 1967 executed in a San Angelo motel by sister of the plaintiff, Mrs. Ernest Albert Sullenger, who died July 1. Oliver challenges the will and testamentary capacity, naming Sullenger as executor and Mrs. Oliver as administratrix. also named is Oliver's son Neville Haynes. The transfer motion arises from Sullenger's Tucson residence claim. Judge Thomason ordered briefs and the matter was set for advisement.

Bennetts Visit Austin Family During Holiday Weekend

Mrs. D. M. Bennett and grandson Walter Friesen with Mrs. H. L. Kokernot Jr. visited the Bennetts’ son Douglas and his family in Austin over the weekend. On the return trip they called on Mrs. Kokernot’s brother Howard Rixon and her mother Mrs. J. W. Rixon in San Antonio.
