A cryptic bulletin from Alpine notes a printer shortage as local housing and work remain rough. It mentions a new Avalanche press installation, emergency printing limits, and an upcoming cut of a municipal auditorium plan to spur development.
Connie Schrimsher hunted last week during the season visiting her parents Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Duncan. She credited a single shot from her 30-06 rifle with a K4 scope for taking a black tail buck and a white tail buck. Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Burgess left Tuesday for Amarillo and planned to return by week’s end.
Judge Harry V. Fisher, 59, a longtime Alpine resident and former Texas legislator, died Sunday after a prolonged illness. He served in World War I, led the Big Bend American Legion post, and is survived by his widow Minnie Louise, son Hal, and sister Mrs. W. H. Davis. Funeral with full military honors was held Tuesday at the Legion hall, Elm Grove cemetery.
Union service at the Methodist church on Thanksgiving morning at 8 o clock will be presided by Dr. Frank C. Dutton of the Baptist church. Rev. F. S. Rogers of the Presbyterian church will deliver the message. morning prayer by Rev. Dudley Anderson of the Nazarene church. benediction by Rev. John Pickering of the Christian church. The Methodist choir will sing two Thanksgiving anthems and the public is invited.
Mayor John W. Gillett proclaims November 22 to December 25 as Christmas Seal Season to support the Brewster County Tuberculosis Association. Alpine residents will receive seals by mail and a mobile X ray unit will offer free chest X rays to those over 15 early next year.
Alpine Shriners attended the Fall ceremonial in El Paso last weekend with candidates from the Border Patrol Roy Owens and listed members F L Mc Colum G W Baines C E Patterson J W Frazer Dr N B Armstrong and Chas Livingston.
Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Browns will clash in an exhibition game at Kokernot field on Thursday March 31 with potential second game depending on plans. Stadium upgrades include new benches, higher fences and a moved scoreboard plus bronze plaques honoring past champions.
The Avalanche will publish one day earlier next week due to a new press installation planned for the weekend. Copy from correspondents and advertisers must arrive a day sooner than usual. Printing will be limited to emergencies Friday and Saturday during the old press removal. Publisher.
A 6 pound 10 ounce purple top turnip grown by Archie Lee of Marathon is exhibited in the Min Sol Corp window at the Holland Hotel building. Verne Clapton says soil conditioning mineral soil from Brewster county enhances yields, with Texas mineral soil also shipped to California.
Dr B F Neely of Pasadena California will conduct a revival meeting at the Nazarene church beginning Wednesday November 24 with R E Dunlap as song leader.
Sul Ross State Lobos near a bowl bid after a decisive 69-6 win over New Mexico State. They face St. Michael's College on Jackson Field in the final conference game as Ted Scown reaches 108 points and Frank Barton adds nine straight extra points. Dan Trawler leads the nation with 114 points while Lee Spears has 104. The Lobos total 354 points to opponents 107 this season.
Sul Ross College star Ted Scown has accumulated 108 points this season as a sophomore guard. The elusive back stands five feet ten, weighs 160 pounds, and hails from Monahans where he lettered in football, basketball, and track. He has displayed several long runs including a 97 yard score. Scown is the son of Mr and Mrs John Scown of Monahans.
Alpine Jaycees plan a two day turkey shoot before Thanksgiving and Christmas to raise funds for a lighted softball field. Jim Francois chairs a committee including Tom Stowell Bill Sohl and Keith Morrow with members assisting. Events run Nov 20 21 from 2 p m to dusk at the Border Patrol range east of town. Turkeys 12 15 pounds dressed will be provided and shooters use .22 rifles either personal or provided. Proceeds support the construction fund for the lights.

New parallel parking markers were installed in Alpine blocks including E Eve B, N 2nd, N Walker, and N Cockrell as part of a broader street improvement plan. Paving and curb work continue, with a sidewalk on the west side of the Fort Davis highway and a new loop at N Sth street south of the Casparis residence enhancing curb to curb pavement north to the city limit.
Alpine businessman D. W. Wells purchased the one quarter block at N. 5th Street and Ave. E last week. He plans a two story brick building on the inside lot next year and will remove old frame structures as soon as possible. Cleanup work has begun this week.
Joe Sonnier from Odessa visited here at the start of the week, staying briefly.
The Sul Ross Lobos, undefeated and untied, weigh bowl offers from Tangerine Bowl Orlando Texoma Dennison Cigar Tampa Harbor San Diego and Oil Odessa as Dr R M Hawkins says chances look good though no commitment made. Ted Scown holds a high scoring mark while Frank Barton set a consecutive points record. The Lobo band, led by John Carrico, may join the bowl trip with St Michael's game color shows planned at Jackson Field.
Two new business houses in Alpine will open soon. Henry Bailey's building on North 6th street will be ready in a few days with a floor warming for a Pilot club dance before Bailey moves in. Smith Furniture plans to occupy its building as soon as ready for Christmas. Concrete floor pouring began on the east end Wednesday.
The American Legion Auxiliary held a Mexican supper and a Brand Quilt auction at the Legion hall on November 11. The quilt first sold to H. L. Kokernot Jr. for 124 dollars, then was auctioned again for the high bid, with total proceeds of 365 dollars. The group thanks donors for Memorial Park fund support and pats Alpine Avalanche and radio K VLF for assistance.
Mr Press Nichols and Mrs Nichols departed Sunday for a week long trip to San Antonio for a family visit and sightseeing.
