The Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs plans statewide outreach to support the Big Bend National Park. Fort Worth chairwoman L J Wardlaw leads a drive to raise funds for acquiring 788000 acres on the American side of the Rio Grande. Dr H W Morelock of Sul Ross College urged delegates to back the project as a major educational and recreational venture, with Mexican land pledges aiding the effort.

Alpine pep squad marks a spirited town read

A note from Joel Wright praises Alpine High School pep squad of about sixty in new uniforms donated by Henry Richardson. Homecoming clash at Jackson Field features Lobos Rams

The Sal Rows Lobos meet the Texas Wesleyan Rams in a homecoming game at Jackson Field tomorrow night at 8 20. It will be the season finale for both teams and includes the dedication of new lights on the field. A last week general election mirrors a 50 year old vote in Brewster County dated Nov 8 1908. Judge Van Sickle won county judge with 12 Foley votes amid old and new tickets. Hunters Clamp Down In Highland Area For 1998 Deer Season

The 1998 blacktail deer season opens with many hunters in the Highland area. Early arrivals began last Saturday to secure prime grounds, with Mara thon reporting crowds passing through on Sunday into the Big Bend. Alpine ranches are taking hunters with numerous advance reservations. The pinextail season runs Wednesday to November 30, with whitetail allowed through December. Bag limits west of the Pecos are one blacktail and one whitetail, or two whitetails.

O Daniel Cuts Ribbon for New Highway 90 Paving

Governor elect O Daniel formally opened 15 mile paving on U S Highway 90 between Marfa and Van Horn in a public ceremony. A crowd of hundreds from West Texas witnessed the event and were greeted by Senator H L Winfield and U S Highway 90 Association officials. The stretch completes an all paved southern route from Jacksonville Florida to San Diego California and connected with Van Horn where Highway 90 continues west. The governor elect and party stayed in Marfa after an inspection trip to a proposed state park site in the Guadalupe region.
