McDonald Observatory recorded 8 879 visitors from May through September 1941, excluding mere drive ups to Mount Locke. Monthly totals were May 800, June 12, July 2,465, August 3,363, September 1,129, with August the peak since opening for visitors.
About ninety ranchmen and locals attended last Saturday’s conservation meeting directed by the USDA County Defense board. Speakers included S. L. Stumberg, Dr. H. W. Morelock, J. W. Doak, Roy Gough, Bill Williams, Joe Mitchell, Herbert Dodd, Mrs. McBride, N. B. Chaffin, and others outlining how ranchers can aid the program. A bouquet to publisher O. T. Sudduth for Sanderson Times defense edition praised by participants.
The regular meeting of the Parent-Teacher Association will be held next Monday afternoon at 3:30 at the Central ward school building. The third grade will present a program and Deputy State Superintendent M. Melton will speak on education meeting the need of youth. An inspection of the recently improved school building will follow, with a large attendance urged.
The Westminster Choir College in Princeton opened its 20th anniversary season with a program featuring two Alpine boys, Ira and Delbert Bowles, son of Nay Bowles. The choir appeared with Bruno Walter conducting the New York Philharmonic Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, marking the 100th anniversary season. A CBS broadcast covered last Sunday, and Tuesday’s NBC coast to coast telecast featured Leopold Stokowski conducting Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the National Broadcasting Company Symphony Orchestra at Mecca Temple in New York City.
Armistice Day services at Sul Ross College auditorium drew many attendees with readings by Elinor Ray and Vera Vosatka, remarks by Frederick Isely, and a parade to the courthouse lawn. Afterward the American Legion hosted open house and a dance at the Hut to thank citizens for their support.
Alpine will mark November 27 as official Thanksgiving Day after a survey of business houses. Merchants nearly unanimously supported the date. City schools will observe the date while Sul Ross College dismisses next Wednesday and observes November 29 as a backup. Mayor Starns stated he would proclaim the official day.
Pearl Fuicron, a county nurse, left Tuesday to attend a meeting of public health nurses and the State Nurses Association in Austin. She will return Sunday. Meanwhile the capital of New Guinea is being moved from Rabaul to Lae due to volcanic eruptions.
The 3rd battalion of the Texas Defense Guard received two honors within 30 days. Brig. Gen. J Watt Page offered Major Arthurd Owens the post of Judge Advocate General of Texas, which Owens declined to avoid relocating his family during the ongoing emergency. Major M M Aiken of Paris was chosen next. First Lieutenant John W Kokernot, an S-2 on the 3rd Bat staff, was named personal aide. Kokernot will move to Austin around December 1 and will travel to Washington several times a year, meeting national leaders and serving with the NMML schools noted for his bearing and fitness. The Big Bend sends congratulations to Johnny.
Will F. Evans of Pioneer West Texan writes to State Representative A H King of Throckmorton inviting him to Alpine to see wonders of the Big Bend region. He argues for removing opposition to a 1.3 million dollar appropriation to acquire land for a proposed Big Bend National Park and promotes tourism and state benefits.
Ranch owners and hunters prepare for the opening of the blacktail deer season this weekend in Brewster and Pecos counties. Hunting preserve licenses cover about 200 000 acres mainly in the Big Bend south of the S P railroad. Game Warden Ray Williams notes deer losses from screw forms last summer due to heavy rain and pest warm spells, with an estimated 3 000 deer dead in the two counties. Despite lower numbers, many deer are expected to be bagged this season. Tickets are on sale in Davis Mountain Federation women’s clubs territory for the Claire Tree Major Children’s Theatre play Sleeping Beauty. Sul Ross Auditorium hosts the matinee next Tuesday at 3 30 in the DMF sponsored event. Cast includes Maddocks as Queen Helena returning for her fourth season with the children’s theatre company.
Alpine chamber of commerce reports healthy finances and rising membership at the quarterly meeting held at the Sul Ross cafeteria. John Newell says membership grew from 73 to 123 and pledges rose from 270 to 375 monthly. debts cleared except a 120 dollar bank note to be retired this week. New secretary manager Jen Burgess introduced. plan to add treasurer role and drop directors missing three meetings. State Parks official Jer Thomp son urged local cooperation to attract and assist park land purchases and visitor traffic. About 70 attendees heard music from Mac MacMullan’s band.
Ranchman injured at his ranch south of Alpine last Saturday afternoon when a knife slipped during goat slaughter, cutting a deep gash above the knee. He was taken to Fort Stockton hospital Wednesday for further treatment.
