The Commission on Higher Education proposed Sul Ross State College receive $1,488,293 for the next biennium, up from $1,158,463 in the current two-year period, as the panel met to finalize funding.
Austin officials and Dr. Bryan Wildenthal discuss Texas higher education funding for 1959 to 1961. The commission recommends about 135 million dollars for two years, up from 114 million for 1958 59, excluding student activity fees under college control. The plan aims to raise enrollments, salaries, and equipment to raise academic quality.

City officials remind residents that winter domestic water rates are in effect: 3 dollars for the first 3000 gallons, 50 cents per 1000 gallons for the next 7000 gallons, and 30 cents per 1000 gallons thereafter. Rates stay in effect until March 1.

Mayor W E Lockhart said the city’s financial statement shows receipts of 22521247 dollars versus disbursements of 18737150 dollars, an excess of 3784097 dollars. He noted about 30000 dollars of short term debt from the prior administration funding paving streets and water projects. He cited surplus in the tax bond interest and sinking fund as proof the city can finance new bonds without tax increases.
