Impressive Armistice Program Held in Marathon

Marathon High School hosted an Armistice Day program honoring World War I veterans and service members. The event featured a 6 flag service flag, remarks by Judge A E Owens and Rev Fred Rogers, music by Sul Rose College band, and a roll call of Marathon’s servicemen. City businesses closed for the two hour program amid local pride in enlistment rates.

Alpine Boys Earn Army Air Corps Wings in June Exercises

Two Alpine youths earned silver wings and lieutenants’ commissions at Thursday drills. Lieut William C. Allen Jr. received wings at Lubbock Flying School and is the son of Mrs. Alice Allen of Marfa and W C Allen of Haskell. His brother Reuben F. earned wings at Hondo on Oct 17. Lieut John W. Blevins completed training at Kelly Field, San Antonio. All three were Alpine school alumni. They are trained to pilot twin motor embers.

Opening Deer Season May Stall In Big Bend Park Region

Deer hunters face limited access as Brewster County locks much of the Big Bend area within Big Bend National Park. Only three hunting reserve permits issued to date. Gasoline rationing delayed, boosting potential hunter turnout. State Parks board reiterates hunting in park areas is illegal with fines up to 100 dollars and arrest authority for violations. Park spans about 800000 acres in the Big Bend country.

Final Report on Big Bend National Park Project Made at Austin Meet

Eugene Thompson reported on the Big Bend National Park land purchase project at an Austin meeting of the Texas State Park board and federal officials. The $1.5 million appropriation bought land mostly for the park, with $500,000 returned to the state school fund, making net land cost about $1 million for roughly 700,000 acres.

Housing Survey To Be Made Here

Alpine civic and church leaders plan a housing survey after a meeting with the Army Air Forces Advanced Flying School committee. Pastors will interview residents to list all rooms and houses for rent to accommodate civilian workers and officer families. Col Gerald Hoyle requested the drive to count homes and streets for newcomers.

Gas Rationing Rules Expand Car Book System and Sticker ID

The plan outlines A B C and T ration books with windshield stickers to identify the book type. A book has 32 coupons of four gallons each, B has 16 for three months, C has 86 for three months, D for motorcycles, E for nonhighway use, and T books provide five gallons per coupon across 96 or 384 coupons for three months.

Virgil Williams Dies After Illness in Alpine

Virgil H. Williams age 46 died at his Alpine home Tuesday after several days illness. A Texas native born December 23 1895 in Plant ersville he lived in Alpine since 1933 and worked for major oil firms across the U S Canada and South America before health faded. He married Elvie Fulcher of Alpine December 6 1936. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Baptist church with Rev. Richard G Irving officiating. Burial was in Elm Grove Cemetery. Surviving are his widow a brother S M Bill Williams of Alpine and four sisters Martha W Jones Fort Worth G E Woodyard Stephenville R P Barfield Coolidge and Morris Steger Montgomery.

Alpine Youth Accident Fatality in Alpine FFA Scrap Drive

Henry H Weyerts Jr aged 15 died after slipping while climbing a truck used by Alpine FFA members gathering scrap metal. A sophomore active in football and Future Farmers, he died Monday morning at 9 30. Funeral held at Baptist church with high school faculty and football team pallbearers. Interment Elm Grove cemetery. Survived by parents a brother Paul a sister Mrs John Clanton and other relatives.

Janie Lee Rowland Ezekiel Joins WAAC at Lubbock

Mrs. Janie Lee Rowland Ezekiel was sworn into the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps at Lubbock on November 6. Her husband, Lieut. Thomas C. Ezekiel, formerly a Sul Ross student, serves in the Army Air Corps in Carnegie, New Mexico. She is a Sul Ross graduate who played trombone in Alpine High School and Sul Ross bands and will likely be assigned to the WAAC training school band in Des Moines, Iowa.

County Tops Bond and Stamp Sales Despite Shortfall

Brewster County beat its bond and stamp sales quota overall, leading by nearly 45000. October sales totaled 55792 with county chairman G W Baines noting the year’s performance. Yearly figures show a strong total against a 15300 quota.

Cain to Report at Fort Bliss Sunday for Training

Peyton Cain, principal of Alpine Junior High School for nine years, is to report Sunday at Fort Bliss in El Paso for training in the officer candidate school. He volunteered for service several weeks ago.

Gasoline rationing date postponed to November 18 21

Registration for gasoline rationing is moved to November 18 20 and 21 with the actual rationing date to be announced later. Surplus passenger tires must be turned in by November 22 at designated Railway Express agencies. Registration will be at school houses with volunteer registrars. Mrs Tess Young Everett Dies After Monthlong Illness

Mrs Tessie Young Everett aged 48 died Monday morning at her mother Mrs John Young Sr s East College Ave home after a month long illness. Born Ozona Sept 28 1899 she lived in Alpine from 1908 and attended Alpine schools. She worked at the local War Price and Rationing board office for four months prior to death. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 10 20 am at Presbyterian Church with Rev Fred S Rogers officiating. interment Rim Grove Cemetery Livingston Funeral Home in charge. Surviving: mother three brothers three sisters Mrs Harry Friend Ozona Mrs Norman Maier San Angelo Mrs Cas Edwards Alpine John and Frank Young Alpine and Woodward Wicky Young Waco.
