Highway to Stockton Opened Tightens Alpine Fort Stockton Route
The 73 mile new road section of U S 67 between Alpine and Fort Stockton opened to traffic last week improving transit between the towns. About 20 miles lie in Brewster county and the rest in Pecos. Permanent drainage structures including 45 bridges and culverts are planned at an estimated cost around 200 000 with contracts likely before the highway department fiscal year end. A long bridge across Antelope Draw is included and the Alpine Fort Stockton distance is shortened by four to five miles.

Armistice Observed in Alpine With Citywide Holiday
Alpine observed Armistice Day with a courthouse program at 11 o clock after a courthouse lawn concert by Sul Ross college band. Ex Senator B F Berkeley and H W Morelock spoke, Carl Thain delivered the Legion response, Alpine High hosted Sanderson High at 2 30 p m, and a courthouse dance followed. Proceeds aided disabled veterans. schools and city offices were closed by mayor L B Stars proclamation.

Blacktail Season Opens Monday in Davis Mountains
The Big Bend Davis Mountain area begins the annual blacktail deer season on Monday the 16th and runs through the month. Several longtime hunting sites are closed this year, while open spots include the W. H. Kokemot ranch south of Alpine, parts of the H. L. Kobernot & Son ranch in Jeff Davis county, portions of the Henderson and Haley ranches, and sections in Brewster County. Blacktail bucks are expected to be scarcer this season.

Cattle Shipments Show Signs of Spring Strength
Cattle shipments are rising toward a fall peak within ten to fourteen days as improved range conditions let ranchers hold stock for heavier weights.
