A local writer urges Alpine residents to thank youths for avoiding Halloween pranks and stresses civic duty ahead of next Tuesday’s elections. The piece warns of low voter turnout and cites Secretary of State John Ben Shepperd on dismal participation rates.
Those wishing to send Christmas packages to boys overseas must mail them by November 15, as announced by the post office. Due to delivery times, parents and friends of boys in the armed services are urged to have their packages ready by next Thursday.
Texas optometrists will donate all professional fees on Tuesday November 13 to a special fund for establishing a College of Optometry at the University of Houston. Dr Millard F Swart co chairs the campaign with Dr Tom Coats noting a goal of 100000 dollars, contingent on further funding and board approval.
Texas Ranger Arthur Hill Sheriff Jim Skinner Deputy Weber and City Officer Jack Johnson seized a large batch of marijuana from a yard enclosed by wire netting. Rodrigues, occupant of the nearby house, arrived during the raid and showed where the weed had been stored in a large tin box. He possessed several cigarettes and faces a penitentiary term of two to ten years per county attorney Patterson.
Thirty three city representatives met with Mayor John Gillett presiding to form the Alpine Traffic Patrol and organize a Traffic Safety council sponsored by local General Federation clubs. Plans include a driver's clinic bicycle and pedestrian safety education in schools and later support for traffic safety legislation and home safety. Next meeting set for November 13 at 8 in the Home Economics building Alpine High School.
The Mile High club in Fort Davis discussed two priorities at a Tuesday meeting: securing a doctor for the community and voting on forming an independent school district. Trustees Grubb and Chapin and Supt. Moore outlined district structure, finance, and benefits, plus anticipated changes in school governance and funding. A doctor prospect was reviewed with Canyon Lodge considered for a clinic, and a committee was appointed to study the proposals.
Dr. Dollahite urged practical livestock disease prevention and parasite control, criticizing wasted funds from ignorance. He praised knowledge as a virtue and discussed programs with FFA members led by George Davis to replace lambs later. Sears Roebuck sponsored the project. Billy Mills completed a similar Southdown contract. a male offspring won grand champion at Fort Worth Fat Stock show. A December Christmas party is planned with Dick Rogers appearing at the meeting.
Mr Shepperd spoke at Sul Ross college and later at a Pilot Lions Rotary joint meeting. He warned that democracy falters when citizens ignore politics and voting. He urged preservation of constitutional principles and Christian ethics, noting low polling rates among eligible voters. He stressed civic responsibility over mere preservation of founding documents.
Officers seized four slot machines found in an unoccupied building being cleared for use by another firm. The machines, connected with five others from a prior raid, were destroyed and $108.50 in money was divided evenly between local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Possession of slot machines violates a Texas law from the 52nd legislature.
Alpine Bucks defeated the Golden Cranes 30 to 13 on their home field in a 5A district game. The Cranes outgained the Bucks in rushing and first downs but Buck defense forced turnovers and special teams highlights including a long kickoff return. The Sul Ross Lobos crushed Stephen F. Austin 34 to 10 to capture their first MEET conference win as Charlie Laffoon and Don Bingham led a high yardage performance. The Lobos head to a non conference game versus Trinity Tigers at Jackson Field tomorrow night as Trinity enters as slight favorites. The 26th annual PTA Hallo carnival opened with Miss Jerry Dickson crowned queen amid ornate pageantry and a full roster of student escorts and guards.
The Youth revival at First Baptist Church, sponsored by the Baptist Student Union of Sul Ross College, opens with two youth evangelists from Baylor University. Ray Mayfield preaches and Don Denry leads the singing as the team hosts radio broadcasts over RVLE at 11 am this week. Evening services begin 7:30 pm daily through Sunday, November 11, with expectations of 300 in Sunday school and 100 in Training Union.
Alpine High School FFA teams won both Greenhand and Senior divisions in the Soil Conservation Service grass judging contest last Saturday. Individual top honors went to Marathon’s Joe Dawson and Alpine’s Pete Bruns and Carlos Torres. Weather shifts and a relocated venue due to wind are noted, with prior winners listed and regional precipitation details for October and early November.
Bones found near the abandoned car of Dr Robert H North in Big Bend National Park are not human. Dr Ross Maxwell, superintendent, cites an FBI Laboratory report stating the bones came from a member of the decapitated family, clearing rumors of human remains.
