Sul Ross to Host Annual Speech Festival for High Schoolers

The Sul Ross State College Speech Department will stage its yearly festival on Saturday November 9 in the Little Theatre of the Fine Arts Building to aid area high school students in preparing for Texas Interscholastic League contests. Attendees from at least nine area schools including Van Horn Odessa El Paso Fabens Barstow Fort Davis and Alpine are expected. The program runs Persuasive Speaking at 9 am Duo Acting at 10 Extemporaneous Speaking at 11 30 Debate and Poetry and Prose Reading at 1 with Sul Ross presenting Mrs McThing at 3 15 pm. Director Dr Katharine Boyd heads the event with Eugene Laurent and Roy Lassiter Jr as critique judges. Faculty and students are invited.

Rules Change at Jeff Davis County 4-H Livestock Show

Jeff Davis County 4-H Club met Monday to plan the Livestock Show. An entry fee per head will fund prize money: lambs one dollar, colts two, steers five. Non registered stock may be shown this year. A sale of one lamb per entrant is allowed. Plans for the Achievement Awards Banquet were discussed with date and place to be announced.

Markers Planned for Alpine to Honor Brewster and Ross

County to get markers honoring Col Her. Brewster and Gen Lawrence Sul Ross. Erection planned for courthouse lawn in Alpine this month per John Ben Shepperd of Odessa, president of the Texas State Historical Survey Committee. Brewster served under Gen Johnston. Ross was a Confederate private who rose to general and later Texas governor.

State Bird Watchers Meet in Alpine

Annual meeting of the Texas Ornithological Society gathers bird enthusiasts from Texas to Alpine and the Big Bend Davis Mountain country for a three day program. Peter Koch of Alpine Chamber of Commerce leads the dinner program and film Desert Gold will debut for the group. Field trips cover Boy Scout Canyon north of Fort Davis Pinto Canyon south of Marfa the Davis Mountains loop and Big Bend National Park with 136 known species and hopes to reach about 150. Alpine Chamber backs arrangements and delegates register Friday at 2 p m at the Holland House Hotel.

Guldemann El Paso Wins Brewster County Hospital Addition Bid

Guldemann Construction & Engineering Co of El Paso awarded the contract for a Brewster County Memorial Hospital addition. Base bid 200,987 with total bid 220,082. Alpine Teacher of the Year Named for 39th Year of Service

Melvin P. Slover, born in Real County Texas and raised in Sanderson, has been named Alpine Teacher of the Year. He began as a high school principal in Madero Ward, taught at Sul Ross College, San Benito, and the University of Texas before returning to Alpine as a Spanish teacher in 1931. Now in his 39th year in Alpine public schools, he has long owned a home there with his wife and two children, Melvin Jr. and Bettigene.
