Work started this week on a new school to be built on land beside the waterworks, with six rooms and a capacity around 100 to 120. The adobe-structure building will sit on a block adjoining the 3 WL Bou property and face a crowded Mesa ward area as plans move toward occupancy by the fall term.
College Band Home dedication set for May 18 in the recreation hall of the new building. A concert directed by Thomas B. Granger precedes a dance open to ex-students and guests, with courtesy requests via Miss Alice, dean of women. The 60 by 50 foot native stone structure houses the band staff on the lower floor and practice and recreation space above, aiming for occupancy by the 1995 summer session.
Mass Elizabeth Harlan will conduct a free electric cooking school May 21 22 and 23 at the Granada theatre in Alpine. Central Power and Light sponsors inviting all homemakers in Alpine and vicinity without charge. Harlan a University of Texas home economics graduate has directed electric cookery classes nationwide and with a national ranges manufacturer. She aims to show homemakers new ideas in cooking and homemaking to economize gain leisure and reduce drudgery with a varied program and entertainment.
Alpine residents are urged to assist in conserving the water supply by careful watering of yards and gardens and using only necessary amounts. Wells are at capacity with levels down sixteen to eighteen feet, and bids are being sought to drill an additional well. Cooperation is appreciated by the city.
May 25 was proclaimed Poppy Day in Alpine by Mayor T. R. Moody urging citizens to wear the memorial poppy to honor World War dead and support living veterans through American Legion funds. The First National Bank opened for business in its new quarters in the Holland hotel building yesterday morning. The bank was closed all day Wednesday during the move of records supplies and equipment from the old building to the new location.
Band officials say sweaters will arrive in one to two weeks for deserving Bul Ross Band members who have served a year or more. The gray coats with red trimming include service stripes for veterans, with high school members exempted. Alpine Rotarians finalize the Rotary Boy Scout carnival set for tomorrow at 7:00 pm on Sixth Street Jon Holland Avenue. Highlights include a kids rodeo at 6:00, vaudeville at 8:30, a cock fight, a game rooster raffle, a ballyhoo band, and an old timers dance to raise funds for the Boy Scout club house debt.
Water difficulties were overcome and drilling resumed at the Smith Decie test well on the Decie ranch near Marathon with depth reached at 925 feet. The Dodson Means test northeast of Alpine paused to clear a hung casing at 961 feet and a rotary rig will start once cleared. Joiner tests near Alpine and near Marfa remained shut down. Storey test in Green Valley south of the area was drilling below 1100 feet with three crews. No report on the King Franklin test below Marathon.
A joint survey by Mexican and American officials explores building a dam on the Rio Grande near Candelaria in Presidio County. The study aims to assess flood control and additional water supply for land development in the upper Presidio valley, with sinking test pits at the dam site once surveys wrap up and arrangements are made.

John Stovell, an Alpine engineer, was awarded a certificate by the State Board Examiners of Land Surveyors authorizing him to practice land surveying across Texas. He passed the exam in early February after many years in highway engineering.
Alpine chamber of commerce Rotary club and Big Bend Post discuss a large fireworks program at rodeo grounds funded by two dances. Plans include courthouse concession stands pistol and rifle shoots and surplus funds aiding the Rotary Scout house. Alpine High seniors at commencement May 30 with address by W H Coleman valedictorian Julia Gentry and Richard Lewis salutatorian. Taccalaureate May 26 in college auditorium Rev Baren Sparks delivers address. Mrs Victoria Guzawska of Chicago dies after being struck by a wheel detached from a taxi wheel.
J E Casner of Alpine was elected four director of the West Texas Chamber of Commerce at the annual Plainview meeting this week. Casner is a former Alpine Chamber of Commerce president and longtime booster for the West Texas organization.
Alpine High School held its annual track and field day at Jackson Field last Friday with 90 to 100 students participating. Raymond Sublett led as high point man with 23 points, winning the 100 yard dash 220 yard dash broadjump and high jump, placing in a throw events. Edwin Moyer followed as second high man with 21 points winning discus and multiple running events. Tom Stovell led in potato race and tennis events. The boys’ team captained by Thorint on placed second with 48 points, Tom Stovell’s team third with 40 points. Prizes included ribbons for top three. The event is sponsored by Alpine High School faculty since Alpine students are ineligible for the district meet.
Miss Audrey Belleigh Schior Enior will appear in a speech recital at the Junior High School tonight at eight oclock. Miss Myrtle Matthews a high school junior will assist and Mrs. Russell Duncan will play at the beginning of the program. An interesting entertaining program of readings songs and piano music is assured and the public is invited to attend.
Cattle from the Davis Mountains region are being sent to California Kansas and Oklahoma as drought drives cattle to grass. Expy of Port Davis shipped about 5000 head to California with others moving to Mexico and Sierra Blanc ranch stock. Kokernot of Alpine sent 600 two and three year old steers to grass near Emporia Kansas. Spring roundups begin as ranchers prepare for weeks of feeding and work. Robert Boyd Alpine won a $50 prize at Granada theatre Money Night this week with next week’s $25 award.
