The Alpine First Baptist revival led by Dr. J B Tidwell and Rev Buren Sparks closed Sunday with baptism and 21 new members. Crowds filled both morning and afternoon services, marking one of Alpine’s most successful revivals in years despite Tidwell’s departure after illness of Baylor’s president.
Harry V. Planer was elected port commander as eight members organized the American Legion post in Alpine. The group aims for 100 percent county veteran membership and memorial observances on May 20. Other officers named include John Gillett post commander and Aroh Allen junior post commander.
The local Parent Teachers Association will meet Monday at 3 PM in the school auditorium. The session will focus mainly on business as activities suspend until the next school term, and the announcement notes the next president will be chosen.
Miss Prosperity eleven carried 660 pounds of meat and medical supplies to Managua after the devastating quake that killed thousands. Pilot William Corthay and Dr J B Hall led a goodwill tour through West Texas to raise funds and assist debris removal, meeting Pan American chamber officials in Marfa.
The Turney hospital showcases new equipment and expansions costing over four thousand dollars since year start. Visitors toured the updated building during National Hospital Day and observed the added rooms, operating room upgrades, and a newly built basement aimed at easing crowding.
The Alpine All Stars a team of college and city diamond players will meet Sanderson in Sanderson Sunday. A player says beating the opponents is not assured due to limited practice by the local team. The lineup for next Sunday includes former stars such as Henry Lease Ray McNell Andy Anderson Cottonpicker Reeve John Unterwood Jeasse Rosette and others.
The city board of equalisation wraps its tax roll review and will hear protests against changes made Monday and Tuesday May 25 and 26. Members Leo Howell Shirley Beales and M Z Hopeo led the effort as city records note alpine et usena and Moorman city secretary. The arable property total near two million despite gaps in data.
Artie Connally pitched Alpine Bucks to an 8 to 0 shutout over Marfa in Alpine. He allowed only one scratch hit, struck out 16, and also contributed a triple homer and four singles. Leonard Howard, Mafo, and Essie Martin each starred for Marfa, while Howarth and Clifton Moss led their offense with multiple hits. Three runs came in the first and third innings, with one in the sixth and seventh.
Plan for the annual scenic drive in August underway with preparations for student transportation. President H. W. Morelock says trips include Haley Ranch loop from Fort Davis to Kokernot interests headquarters and a barbecue by Herbert Kokernot. The Santa Fe Canada trip to gain early next month with about a hundred expected to participate.
In the BL Pas s 0 grading district, Alpine Troop 41, with ten boys and led by Charles Wade, ranks second for promotions and progress. Only one other group, El Paso's Troop 14, rates higher among 72 troops.
A. B. Mayhew of Uvalde, president of the Sul Ross board of regents, told the local chamber of commerce that Sul Ross is the best located of Texas seven teachers colleges and will become very popular. He praised progress since joining the board six years ago and forecast further campus additions as the college grows. The remarks were delayed to the last page.
Marquis, former Sul Ross president and ex Denton teachers college president, was elected San Antonio public schools superintendent. The four year contract offers $10,000 annually, but he had not yet accepted. He previously spent years in Alpine and was popular there.
Seventh grade students spent a day in Paradise Canyon with chaperones Mr and Mrs D M Major Mrs F B Lewis Mr Roy Whiteside Miss Stetting Miss Edna Owens Mrs George Benson and Mrs Bob McMurry. They played indoor ball and climbed mountains as part of the class activity.
Alpine high school seniors face final exams as plans for graduation near completion. Horace Olive has finalized a list of 24 diploma candidates, based on their current year’s coursework and exams.
Hon A B Mayhew of the Texas teachers colleges board of regents told the Chamber of Commerce that the outlook for West Texas is bright. He said the next ten years will bring better times, with population growth and new businesses restoring prosperity in Southwest Texas.
Announcements from Al Dine schools set a full commencement week with baccalaureate services Sunday and the commencement exercises Wednesday night. Central ward students perform Monday under their teachers, and Junior high pupils present Tuesday. Madero ward plans an entertainment event as part of the close of school.
Alpine scouts from troops 48 and 41 travel to Marfa for a district field day. Eight troops compete in scoutcraft events with Alpine entrants expected in several events. Last meet, troop 41 won top overall and excelled in Marathon. Prizes include knives axes and merit badges. Awards to be announced after the field day.
TA Beard owner of a 4 feed store in Alpine buys Alpine Jewelry Co by purchasing Mrs Leo Howell's stake. Beard will run both businesses with his wife present, inventorying stock and preparing to take charge tomorrow.
City health officials say Alpine will implement new milk ordinances in the coming months. Dr E Wright notes milk supply is ample and the six largest producers are under a fest period, with enforcement and Grade A milk advantages to be phased in during the first week.
Alpine golfers led by Jimmie Keefer edged Stockton players by one stroke in an 18 hole medal match. Competing were Jim mie Keefer Joe Burgess Temple Pouncey Vickey Young W H Terry Jr Harry Watson Rufusy Baines.
The correction of defects found by county health nurse Mrs Lala Krueger during her stay last fall is being continued by Mrs George Bain and the local PLT A health committee. Card checks show parents' interest in their children's welfare and steps taken per the health campaign guidance.
Two delegates from Alpine attend the West Texas Chamber of Commerce three day convention in Lubbock. The event started yesterday with a breeder feeder day and a two reel color film by D B Colp plus views of Fort Davis and nearby parks.
Sul Ross anticipates attendance over 1000 for the summer session as high enrollment and rapid growth continue. President Morelock expresses confidence registration will exceed last year, aided by a new library building with an 1100 seat auditorium and a 400 capacity cafeteria to accommodate students.
A weeklong revival begins May 24 at the First Christian church in Pecos with Rev. Gus Rammage of Pecos preaching the first service. Rev. L. W. Bridges announced plans after returning from a Wichita Falls convention. Sunday morning services were moved to accommodate college activities, with Bridges delivering the first sermon Sunday night and Rammage continuing through to May 31.
