School Superintendent Winn resigns from Alpine district

Clarence Winn submitted his resignation effective June 30 at a May 12 Alpine School Board meeting. He has served since 1964 and plans for the future are not final. The board announced Alice Reed Olson’s retirement and accepted George Vanzhal’s resignation.

Alpine Public Schools Win Accreditation Extension to 1971

Sup t Clarence Winn informs the Alpine school board that accreditation standards will not be withdrawn until July 1 1971 after a report from H E Phillips director of school accreditation Texas Education Agency. The board will reconvene with a teachers committee to discuss proposed pay increases for the 1970 71 year. Committee members include Thad Corkins Jack Williams and John W Pattillo.

Alpine plans summer recreation program registration May 18

Registration for Alpine summer recreation runs May 18 through 22 in public schools with activities for elementary and older youths. Programs run June 8 to July 31 at the high school gym with supervised play daily from 9 to 11 30 a.m. and 2 to 5 p.m. Lions Club sponsors promise a diverse slate of events including track, bicycles, arts and crafts, and more based on interest.

West German Families Tour Big Bend Park Caravan 1970

Twenty families from the West German diplomatic corps in Washington will spend the weekend in Big Bend National Park en route to San Francisco. The caravan named Caravan America 1970 is sponsored by National Geographic Magazine and the Wally Byam Foundation. They travel in Airstream trailers pulled by 22 Pontiacs and will arrive May 16 at Rio Grande Village then depart for Las Cruces, New Mexico.

SBA Honors Jan Smith for Texas Citizen of the Year

Dr. Jan Smith owner of Al ine Veterinary Clinic is named Texas Citizen of the Year by the Small Business Administration. Fred Newman of SBA Lubbock will present the award at a joint Lions Club and Chamber of Commerce meeting at 12 noon Tuesday May 19 in the Highland Restaurant. As Texas recipient she is eligible for the national award.

Alpine Alliance mobilizes aid for Lubbock tornado victims

The Alpine Ministerial Alliance calls for clothing canned goods medical supplies sundries and money to help tornado victims in Lubbock. Items and checks should be delivered to the First Christian Church educational building or sent to Box 505 with donations to be distributed by participating ministers early next week.

Hospital aid studied at Brewster Memorial Hospital

County officials study options to improve Brewster Memorial Hospital finances. Five hospital board members asked the Commissioners Court for aid to cover operating costs. Alternatives discussed include county subsidies, creating an independent district, or closing the hospital. The judge pledged to keep it open during his term. Patient load runs 18 to 20 daily. 27 needed to break even. Payroll has doubled over three years from $15,000 to $30,000 monthly.

Outstanding Sul Ross students honored at Awards Day Assembly

May 12 awards recognized many Sul Ross students and staff. Joe Priest of Olton named Man of the Year and Gaby Ginn of San Antonio Woman of the Year. Chemistry, Alpha Psi Omega, Sage editors, scholarships, and perfect attendance honors were awarded to numerous seniors across multiple majors and towns.
