City Council Raises Garbage Rates and Approves Miscellany
The City Council increased minimum residential garbage fees from 1.50 to 1.75 and minimum commercial rates from 3 to 4. Baptist Mother of Year named for Alpine resident
Mrs. Otto E. Hilbrich of Alpine is honored as Texas Baptist Mother of the Year. Her family includes Otto Hilbrich Jr., Paul Day Hilbrich, and Willa Dale Johnson. She works at Sul Ross State University and with First Baptist Church Alpine, sponsors the Young Women’s Auxiliary, and serves on the BSU council while also handling PBX duties. Southwestern Bell plans a mountain tower for microwave tests to enable long distance dialing, seeking to lease 200 by 200 foot tract atop A Mountain after council approval of testing without rezoning.

Presbyterians Set Meeting With Miller to Preach
Michael Nelson Miller of Austin Theological Seminary will preach at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Presbyterian Church. He plans graduation in June and ordination soon after. A Tyler, Texas native and Baylor University graduate, he has done youth work in Texas and England. He is married with one child. A congregational meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday.

Henry H Weyerts 75 longtime resident of Alpine died Wednesday May 6 at his home after a short illness He was born September 7 1894 and was a retired carpenter and rancher He leaves his wife Annie Lockhart Perry a daughter Lucile Clanton Alpine a son Dr Paul Weyerts Alpine five sisters and one brother Also two former sons preceded him Burial is in Elm Grove Cemetery after funeral services at 4 pm at the Presbyterian Church with Rev Jimm Wilson officiating.

Two top contenders Pete Gallego and Sam Thomas advance to the Democratic runoff to be held Saturday June 6. County Judge Felix McGau Ceoneedidienie Robert and Rex Ivey Jr. were defeated in the Democratic primary. The runoff winner will face Howard in the general election.

Lone Star Conference Spring Meet Opens At Sul Ross
More than 200 college competitors are expected for the Lone Star Conference Spring Meet at Sul Ross State University Friday and Saturday May 8 9. Ten colleges will compete in track golf and tennis on the Alpine course with SWT favored to win the 54 hole track event and ET X favored in tennis.
